It’s just so appalling and enraging how casual and commonplace this has become. I’m out of words.

RFK: "There's five hundred million Arabs in the world. And yet they don't produce science. They don't win the Nobel Prize. They don't win the Fields Prize. They don't win the Wolf Prize. They don't produce literature."

Dutch visitors brought me a giant stroopwafel tin filled with mini stroopwafels and it’s delighting me every day. They also suggested I could use it to hold sewing supplies when the stroopwafels were done. Of course!

It's really important to pay attention to the fact that Lula beat the fascist candidate not by compromising and trying to meet fascist voters in the middle, but by sticking to his guns, promising prosecutions for election interference, and mobilising his own voters to turn out in greater numbers.

In his acceptance speech, Lula says he will work to regulate digital platforms in Brazil. “Digital crimes must be dealt with like real-life crimes.” This comes after Meta directly interfered with the Brazilian elections, favouring Flávio Bolsonaro.

Spent a chunk of You Can See Everything feeling miffed on behalf of Errol Morris, who would have made an amazing Holmes doc (but was rejected). And OK fine then I did see why Morris couldn’t have pulled off anything like this and how (unfortunately) this is the perfect movie style for our times.

My other takeaway is that if Elizabeth Holmes is in prison for grossly overpromising, Elon Musk should *definitely* be in prison.

In defense of Holmes and who’s on first, it’s just…not *that* funny? I mean, I get the joke, but it’s such a basic joke that you’re (I’m) kind of waiting for there to be more joke?

Maybe I’m revealing too much about my own mental workings to say that even as a kid, i found it a stressful routine — like I got the pun of it and the root of the miscommunication, but it was just aggravating to hear people miscommunicate. I still feel that way!

Reminds me how a week after Trump was elected the first time, I got on the subway and someone had drawn swastikas all over the train car. “May” have been a connection.

“May” is doing a lot of work here.

Friend from Amsterdam came to visit and was like “what is up with NYC, there is so. much. weed.” From *Amsterdam*!

70 percent of the internet was vulnerable yesterday to very bad security flaws inside a coding language. Turns out, *one volunteer* is mostly responsible for maintaining that code & helping push updates. Yesterday Ondřej Surý saved the internet. So I called him up www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

theatlantic.comThe Man Who Saved the Internet YesterdayOndřej Surý was a relatively anonymous volunteer working on PHP security. Then the internet exploded.

An old 1978 commercial produced by the I.L.G.W.U. (International Ladies Garment Workers' Union).

Absolutely deserving of all caps. Maybe even deserving of believing in some kind of higher power because how else is this planet so full of amazing variety for us to admire!

I was grumbling inwardly about having to go all the way to the IFC Center to see The History of Concrete, but it is in fact a real joy to come out into the W Vill with post-movie John Wilson goggles on.

When you pick the ideal seat in the movie theater and it’s clearly other people’s ideal too because it’s squooshier than all the others.

Just got a hilarious opinion survey about Ken Griffin, who is clearly trying to launder his image. Buddy there’s such an easy answer for you and all the other billionaires: support wealth taxes!

And then right after this, the NYU kid next to me at Wash Sq Park told her friend she was going to hang out with Eleanor Bezos — “she’s like my best friend now actually.”

*Ella, I think. They joked about her last name so I guess it’s Sanchez’s daughter. Anyway just sitting here in a soup of billionaires.

So l love (hate) how replies from any company’s support are now four long paragraphs and the first is “I fully understand the problem and empathize wholeheartedly” and the next three reveal that the AI did not, in fact, understand the problem.

But since it’s AI and not a person, at least I can go ahead and do the bitchiest “per my previous email” reply. Small consolation.

I’ve been released from IDF custody with a “warning,” apparently because of my public profile (I told them I wasn’t even a congressmember yet, just a nominee). But several dozen rabbis & participants harvesting olives with me are still in detention.

The first genuinely honest ad for generative AI I've ever seen, from Microsoft / CoPilot A mediocre white guy sees his non-white colleague getting praised for good work, he asks AI to *literally copy it*, and then he gets all the praise instead: www.ispot.tv/ad/SoDi/micr...

Another reason Trump was on a tear about the name of New Mexico.

New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez announced Wednesday the state is filing a civil lawsuit against Jeffrey Epstein’s longtime attorney Darren Indyke and accountant Richard Kahn, alleging the two helped facilitate Epstein's sex trafficking operation out of Epstein's Santa Fe County ranch.

Nobody likes surveillance cameras so let’s install those tire-shredding spikes like they have at rental car lots, and they automatically deploy when anyone goes over the speed limit. Who keeps our tires safe? We keep our tires safe! (B/c it’s not as if NYC drivers care about keeping *peds* safe.)

I’d like to thank: -my roof for the cosmos and my husband for tending and picking -my front strip of 6 inches of dirt for the arugula, completely untended, and -my neighbors for the white flowers, set out in a bucket with the sign “free flowers please do not take bucket”

This is reminding me that the government of Giza, Egypt, managed to reopen the Cairo Agricultural Museum after it was closed for several years due to poor maintenance. If Egypt can manage to pull together money and care, so can Philly.

On Tues Oct 27th, Philly will have gone a full month without access to the Academy of Natural Sciences. Join us at academy at 6pm for a candlelight vigil. We’re keeping the light of hope alive. Wear black if you have it. We’re the dark times, but this fight isn’t over.

Although for all I know maybe the Aga Khan swooped in and paid for the Ag Museum fix. But hey we’ve got plenty of billionaire philanthropists in this country too, right? Right?

Made the mistake of reading replies to an Abdul El-Sayed post on Twitter and good god, more power to him and every Muslim in America—I’m so sorry what you have to hear.

Family ties aren’t a political confession. People can support a movement for its community work or opposition to dictatorship without endorsing everything it does. Judge this Egyptian American by his own words and actions—not his relatives’ affiliations.

Zora O'Neill@zoraoneill.com

Not to muddy the waters, but...the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt is just not that bad? Yes, more-violent groups have cited the MB as inspiration, but the MB itself has generally been a pretty solid, organized institution/party working against dictatorship and providing social support.
