Ah yes, the week before election day, when the train is largely on the tracks and all we can do is stress out or celebrate whatever tiny little clues and glimpses we might find.

🎊 It is becoming clear 🥳 that a certain portion 🎉 of the GOP base 🍻 is not planning on voting 🤩

If I were Obama, I'd make it my mission for the next 7 days to find a new bit of real estate in Donald Trump's head.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Trump is BIG MAD about Obama saying the White House now looks like Saddam opened a Cheesecake Factory: "He's not a smart guy. He's not smart at all ... for you to say it's a Cheesecake Factory, that just shows why you were a lousy president"

This is just that meme where someone posts "this is what America would look like under socialism" and then posts a picture of what American store shelves looked like during COVID ... under capitalism.

JD Vance fails to see the irony in his speech: I remember going to a gas station and waiting in line for hours for gasoline that of course had shot up in price because of a region of the world made up of countries whose name I couldn't even pronounce.

When Im having a bad day on Bluesky, I block the 5 most annoying people in my feed. Not the ones I disagree with necessarily, but the ones who are particularly stupid drama queens. No reason to give bad faith randos the joy of energy-vampiring my free time Keeping a clean feed is self-care.

Michael Hobbes@michaelhobbes.bsky.social

"You can't block someone just for being annoying!" Those are actually the most important people to block

Ratfuckers are gonna ratfuck.

Yeah, this is really bad. It's good that El-Sayed distanced himself from it, but I am in awe at how Cenk's left-wing PAC managed to combine antisemitism with transphobia and pitch it as *supporting* the Democrat in this race.

The 'something' was the Civil Rights Act. "I think we may have lost the south for your lifetime - and mine" is something that LBJ said after he signed it. www.theguardian.com/books/2023/j...

Something happened in the 70's that crystallized politics (and many other topics) into a new set of assumptions and priors. It gave rise to Reaganism and completely crushed New Deal Socialism; Dems that eventually reemerged were and still are centrists scared of their own shadows.

Rebranding is definitely a good and important part of politics. Don't discount that. But if one of the reasons people hate AI is because they think (correctly or incorrectly) it will destroy their jobs, saying 'this AI is much smarter than you, it's SUPER Intelligent' seems like a bad rebrand.

Lum@brokentoys.social

why are people using english, this is doubleplusungood rectify

And for the people who hate AI because they think (correctly or incorrectly) that it produces nothing but cheap slop, it just looks like you're out of touch. So I've really no idea what he thinks this will actually accomplish.

The week before election day is always fun because you spend the rest of your time going 'there's no way that these idiots can get stupider and more racist' but then they prove that, no, they have an endless capacity to do that.

If you are too young to really remember the Obama years, conservatives were like this every single day. He really did just break their brains.

We are now at the time of year where my autistic kid just wants to drive around neighborhoods at night looking for cool Halloween lights and I cannot stress enough how magical and wonderful it is. Even moreso with December christmas lights.

A tough thing in explaining to people why having children is enjoyable is that all the bad stuff is very easy to explain (lost sleep, lost time, more sickness, less sex, etc. etc.) whereas most of the really good stuff whispers.

For all the talk about 'throwing XXX under the bus', this purity politics bullshit is the REAL throwing minorities under the bus, boosting fascism and increasing suffering across the board in hopes it will result in a glorious revolution that's never going to come.

Tom is a principled Reagan Republican who is worth following in part to be sure that you don't get completely subsumed by the echo chamber effect, but anyway him of all people saying this is a hell of a condemnation.

Tom Nichols@radiofreetom.bsky.social

I don't think anything can be built out of the current GOP.

There are lots of reasons why the Democratic Party is likely never going to die that have to do with entrenched money and power but don't forget one huge factor is that the alternatives are run by morons.

NEW: DSA's National Political Committee passed two resolutions today aimed at Los Angeles mayoral candidate Nithya Raman, beginning processes that could result in DSA-LA being forced to rescind its endorsement of her this weekend and/or Raman herself being expelled from DSA by January.

Donald Trump bulldozed the white house and is threatening to do the same to the Kennedy Center but the thing you're concerned about definitely seems like the thing you should be covering instead

No. This is dooming for nothing. Lula *did* end up cruising to re-election, it was called an hour after polls closed. The fact that he managed to pull that off when everything was pointing to a Bolsanaro win is not terrifying, it's inspiring. Stop looking at things through the worst possible lens.

Grim but in absolutely no way surprising.

Don Moynihan@donmoyn.bsky.social

Pretty grim footnote to West's career that he ended up serving the richest man in the world's successful attempt to restore white nationalism to the US government.

I’d say Trump isn’t as good at influencing foreign elections as Putin, but I dunno, the Serbia results are a huge defeat for Putin. He’s lost both Orban & Vucic in a year.

The impetus for this rant was Bill Maher telling his mostly liberal audience that he had dinner with Trump and Trump is actually a pretty nice guy.

checking in on the president of the united states

Just remembering when Kamala tried to get Joe Rogan to put her on the air, just so at least some people in that audience would get exposure to the idea that she's not a crazy person.

I watched the original Friday the 13th, the original Nightmare on Elm Street and then on a whim, cut straight to Freddy vs. Jason and let me tell you, the tonal whiplash on THAT transition was quite insane.

There's a lot of really stupid people on the Bsky today saying that Political Purity Is Good, and let me tell you, these people are wrong, these people are idiots, and these people are so much the reason why the left can't build persistent power in this country that you wonder if they're GOP plants.

Political Purity is poison. Get the Democrats into office on November 3rd and save your belly aching for November 4th. This will be vastly better to your cause than any Republican, and gives a theoretical President AOC much greater odds for enacting meaningful change in 2029.

Also, if you're running 'both parties are the same' after the last 10 years of politics, we can safely assume that you have shittier understanding of politics than your average sea cucumber.

The shocking thing about the 2020 primary being won by Biden winning the black vote and the south is that it's exactly why Clinton won the primary in 2016 and pretty much none of the other candidates learned a damn thing from the experience.

This is part of why I expect it to be Harris. The 2028 rogue's gallery is stumping in New Hampshire like it's 2008 and she seems to be the only one smart enough to head down South.

Dear Donald, this is your National Republican Senate Committee leader writing I am here to tell you to absolutely keep saying this shit

Yes and also this sort of 'uniparty' nonsense feels so hollow deployed in the midst of a national stove-touching. It turns out the difference between a 'milquetoast corporate Democrat' and Trump was really big! President Harris would not be driving trans soldiers out of the military!

youtubers, streamers, podcasters, etc are always on this beat bc they don't know how anything works & know that if they say something like this, their audiences will lap it up now & also 3 years later when they point to total gay commie revolution not happening and go "see? i was right!"
