Exciting news! I am joining the Homosaurus Collective as project coordinator to help with the French translation of the LGBTQ+ linked-data vocabulary. Among other responsibilities, I will be reviewing terminology and planning feedback sessions with Quebec-based community organizations.

It's astonishing how bad the Democrats are at fighting fascism.

Kamala Harris: I think that going in the direction of impeachment is not a good idea. I was in the Senate for the last go-round, and the votes aren’t there. I think after the election, we all have to just also agree that our attitude has to be to get stuff done…

I didn’t think Obama’s stand up comedy routine was especially good and I’m confused about why everyone is celebrating it.

This is kinda funny (but also not funny... RIP Jason's inbox)

In the last few weeks i've been bombarded with emails from people who have minor tech support problems. ChatGPT is telling them to email me, writing their emails, and compiling "evidence packets" after convincing them they have stumbled on a major story: www.404media.co/chatgpt-keep...

I've been thinking of getting a good paper weekly planner for 2027 and it's maddening how most of them treat Saturday and Sunday as an afterthought. They'll give you full columns for Monday-Friday, and then half columns for Saturday-Sunday. Who lives like this?!

LOL Even with that warning, I was not prepared. Completely insane. (I didn't read any further.)

It’s Friday night, I’m on my way home and I’m hungry and I resisted the temptation to eat at one of 75 fast food restaurants because I have leftovers at home and I think I deserve a freaking medal!!

Turns out I was not hacked by a surprisingly hot comms professor in Virginia. My partner was gonna send something to a friend of theirs and forgot to tell me. 😅

Random address added to my Amazon account, and yet there is no other sign that anybody accessed my account, no suspicious orders were placed, etc. Freaky. I hate when stuff like this happens. Reset everything just to be safe.

I and everyone else keep saying this but: I’m so tired of this shit.

you're just going about your day and you now get to read stuff like "Trump says Sundar Pichai talked him out of renaming the Atlantic Ocean" and you just have to nod and move on with your day. “Oceans are different, sir.” lmao www.theverge.com/policy/10167...

This is craaaaaazyyyy. Guess they’re just saying the quiet part out loud now.

The first genuinely honest ad for generative AI I've ever seen, from Microsoft / CoPilot A mediocre white guy sees his non-white colleague getting praised for good work, he asks AI to *literally copy it*, and then he gets all the praise instead: www.ispot.tv/ad/SoDi/micr...

It's so confusing to see people be impressed by things that are just so transparently mediocre to me, whether it's ai slop or Elon Musk's pathetic car stunts. It makes me feel crazy. Why can't people see what is right in front of their eyes?

The best thing about being born in between generations is I get to disavow both genXers and millennials.

In case you're not convinced that McGill's student population is racist as fuck, there it is. (The part this person is refusing to say out loud is that the man is Indigenous.) Lots of other nasty comments in the thread www.reddit.com/r/mcgill/com...

Messed up situation but the students quoted are being unreasonable. I understand that people are worried about their safety but to expect a university to disclose someone's criminal background to other students is completely insane. Do we believe in rehabilitation or not? And these are law students!

Look, I understand that students (and especially women) are going to feel uncomfortable around a person who has been convicted of a violent crime. But the rapidly forming consensus around this situation seems to ride on the "moderate to high risk" of reoffending, which is problematic.

No one seems to be willing to interrogate how that assessment was made, by whom, or what systemic biases are involved.

There is so much bait-and-switch in Canada’s “digital sovereignty“ (heh) strategy. Bottom line is that building out massive polluting AI data centres to host US tech companies is a form of digital colonialism: they control the tech & the profits, and export the dirtiest, lowest-value part abroad.

I question why anyone would look at this extremely obvious fake stunt and convince themselves it is “extremely cool shit.” There’s a whole class of people (many of them journalists) who still think Elon is “cool” even as they concede he’s a bad person.

Alex Hern@hern.bsky.social

do think there's a danger of looking at extremely cool shit like a car driving upside down then doing a kickflip before landing, and convincing yourself it's actually lame because the guy funding it is a white supremacist

This Indigenous man spent 4 decades in prison, is out on parole, is advocating for prisoners and former inmates labour rights, and is attending law school. And McGill - with its white supremacist colonial history - is going to throw him under the bus to make white students feel safer?

The racial aspect of this is buried at the bottom of the article. Ewert is Métis and won a Supreme Court case in 2018 about racist risk assessments that failed to take into account his Indigenous status. How much do you want to bet the anonymous women who ran to the press with this story are white?

And this is happening at a time when women's safety on campuses in North America is being hotly debated in the media. But you know who makes young women unsafe on campus? Rich white frat boys.

. @rgcooke.bsky.social has a fantastic book on Wikipedia that just came out today. Deeply researched and beautifully written, the book offers insights into the personalities & debates that shaped “the last enyclopedia humans will ever write.” Sharing a sample paragraph that I’ve chosen at random.

This whole thread is such a good description of the style of writing that some people seem to genuinely believe is scientific. It’s hard to tell if they’re being disingenuous or if they literally have never read a scientific paper and think this is how everyone does it.

I have been called a boomer for referencing Star Trek. I guess that’s fine. Unrelated, but when I pointed out to my Gen Z nephew that I am in fact an Xennial, he immediately retorted: “Please never say that word again!” 😂
