Another reason to abandon the "hallucination" metaphor for when #AI gets things wrong: The more AI gets tied into human mental health the more we need to keep distinctions clear between what people experience and outputs from the machines they use. papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

One of my favorite sci-fi shows of the decade—of the century!—is celebrating its third anniversary today. Scavengers Reign was a shooting star🌠, poorly supported by HBO Max and then Netflix (as it was only available in a handful of countries), but I'm so glad this one season exists.

“[US EDUs now have] access to … tools that can continuously monitor faculty intellectual labor at the exact moment when the governance bodies that would resist such surveillance have been legislatively dismantled in several states and weakened in many more. The result is an academic panopticon.”

No two words send AI industry advocates into fits of rage more than "stochastic parrots." The question is: Why? Why do they get so worked up over this particular critical framework time and time again? I sat down with @emilymbender.bsky.social, one of the coauthors of the original paper, to discuss

In the past week I have been quoted in a lot of pieces and the titles are all over the map: “humanities researcher,” “technologist,” “tech critic,” “artist (derogatory)”…My fave was “respected AI researcher” in The New Yorker last year. None of these are really wrong, but none are really correct.

One of the most misleading terms is “AI hallucination”. Use “AI mirage” instead. Why “mirage”? Don’t make me tap the preprint > papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

Every half-ass plan for our extinction that they provide just turns me on. No internet, you say? No online banking?? No 2FA to use the bathroom at my job??? Baby I was a latchkey kid in the 1980s. You’re describing my platonic ideal. Extinct me.

Ben Collins@bencollins.bsky.social

Once again, there's a reason they won't spell out how we'd go extinct. Are we getting Jurassic Park'd because the AI is reinventing dinosaurs? Are they getting access to the nuclear codes and hypnotizing the president into using them? They are referring to bank/infrastructure hacks and exaggerating.

I find that, no matter how many ways I acknowledge LLMs etc are changing, people dismiss me as “crazy” or “unserious” because I refuse to attribute those changes to “intelligence.” I will say again, automated language production and intelligence are completely different things.
