A volatile simian nervous system, ominously new to the planet. Canadian law professor. Transnational law, labour regulation, cooperatives and corporate governance, knowledge politics. Currently obsessed with the uses of legal scholarship. Two time dad.
A key part of her post: internal Meta documents that they were forced to turn over during discovery show a deliberate, sustained, multifaceted agnotogenic campaign by the company to cast doubt on scientific findings on social media harms and to redirect research attention elsewhere.
Thought-provoking reflection on the transformation of academic life (in Australia) by @duncanmcdonnell.com
Much resonates with me in the U.S., where political interference adds a fourth layer.
Well it finally happened. I saw an interesting source in a footnote, found it online, downloaded to scan through, went to save it in an appropriate location--and confirmed that I had already saved a copy last year.
I'm going to try to do this cleanly.
Today's right wing governments are networked to each other. Those networks are well-documented. You can read about them in books. Following the elections in one node of that network is good practice for understanding the U.S. node.
I just think Matt's wrong about this. We're at a point in our technological development where a ton of problems spill over national borders--if Flavio Bolsonaro burns down the Amazon, that will flood houses in Miami.
My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today.
Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.
Also because I see some people making claims to the contrary: yes turnout absolutely does matter in Brazilian elections. Voting is "compulsory" but it's not like that means a cop comes to your house with a gun and a ballot, obviously.
In the middle of this global wave of anti-authoritarian organizing, I'm glad I'm from a country, Canada, that is [checks notes] cozying up to dictatorial governments to sell fossil fuels in India and Turikyë
I don’t know how people could say that programming and art are completely different disciplines when both workflows involve going ‘This will never work, I’m a failure’, changing one thing, then thinking you might be the smartest person alive
The silly take is just that people aren’t clocking the fact that the joke works because “Cheese-cake-factory” is just an extremely fun combination of words. Substitute any other restaurant name—it is wayyyyyyyyy less fun!
The argument against recognizing the result is obviously special pleading and sour grapes but it's actually really gratifying to know that Bolsonaro's camp was (originally) on board with extended voting to address repression allegations
The correct legal approach to this seems to be that when platforms start favouring some content over other, they don‘t deserve immunity for third party content on the basis that they are just platforms. They should become liable. finance.yahoo.com/media-advert...
This is collective punishment, which is expressly prohibited under Article 33 of the Fourth Geneva Convention of 1949. www.timesofisrael.com/liveblog_ent...
A moving, piercing, aching essay. A remembrance of the horrors and hopes that led to Zionism's ascent in Palestine but also a reminder of what is at stake in debates about Israel and its future: not just the fate of the Jews but, in some sense, the fate of humanity. A masterpiece.
If I had to distill the most important sociocultural fronts being challenged by the US far-right today, they would boil down to the following three. I'm listing them from broad to narrow in terms of their issue sets, but I think they're all equally important and mutually entangled.
Most academics will read this story in a very different way to how it is being reported.

Put aside the economic stupidity of the Trump admin's Canada tariffs, the political stupidity is just unbound.
The election is in less than two weeks. The cake is baked. No Maine voters are changing their mind because you exempted blueberry producers for a week.
omg hahahahahahaha

As (valid!) criticism of and pressure on Israel becomes more legitimate and common, it is absolutely critical that we notice, call out and denounce antisemitism that purports to be done in the name of anti-Zionism
Straight up antisemitism under a guise of anti-Zionism. The allegation is @free-play.bsky.social excluded a funder because someone threatened to walk if they took money from "a Zionist." No evidence of funder's views on Israel, but she's Jewish, born in Israel and her game had Jewish culture items
The far right has done this over the course of decades to generate its political hegemony within the GOP, and through it, over the state and federal govt landscape.
The Dems will likely benefit from two backlash cycles to come, but they should not ignore this other important work between them.
It's so weird that people with reality-distorting wealth traditionally would spend on things they thought were nice and admirable and would cause later generations to praise their name but for the last decade the people with reality-distorting wealth dream of being brutal post-apocalyptic warlords.

The statement from @free-play.bsky.social (they've disabled quote posts) sadly does nothing to dispel the basic claim that they excluded a funder for being Jewish. It's disappointing they chose to not even use the word antisemitism.
Look we can't say anything definitive about the causal link between climate conditions in general and specific weather events, but there is still _a very good chance_ that the soldiers at CFB Wainwright were killed by climate change

Incisive, luminous, profound and moving. It marks out in vivid detail an image of cutting edge tech as the product of collective human achievement. Not to be missed.
It is always a soothing boon to my democratic ideals to see that so many people know how to vote strategically--even if I think their ends and means are despicable
