I really enjoyed Kickapoo but it's within the 100 mile border zone. We got stopped by plain clothes chuds with their fingers on the trigger of AR-15s. It was remote enough they could have killed us and rolled is into a ditch. I'm not going back until Trump is out of office.

Kickapoo Cavern State Park and Devil’s Sinkhole State Natural Area take some planning (and driving), but they’re both worth the effort. https://www.texasmonthly.com/travel/least-visited-texas-state-parks/

We've been waiting for the 2011 Fright Night to be on a streaming service for over a decade now. The 3D sfx have aged horribly as has the ironic (I think?) sexism. But the movie is still pretty great. I think the theme for these 4 movies is "the actors completely understood the assignment".

I would be a one issue voter for a candidate that wants to use public funds to bring back cafeterias that provide adults affordable meals and free ones to children and the elderly

You might think I'm joking about the mailers, but I've been going to PFLAG meetings for about a year now and a lot of trans people coming out are mature adults. Sending a flyer of resources to a bunch of seniors outside of cities who may have always known they were this way... It's a choice.

It's gonna be really hilarious if this dirty trick leads to thousands more trans people coming out. "What's this giant bump on the graph", oh that's when Republicans sent out a trans & LGBTQ+ student resource guide.

This post is unavailable.

I really wish every article about school closure started with a graph of the number of births per year. Why are we having this problem? - "well 5-18 years ago..."

Thanks Tim! Here's my profile on the District 9 race in Central Austin: www.austinpolitics.net/the-district...

austinpolitics.netThe District 9 raceCan Zo beat back the NIMBY insurgency?

@jackcraver.bsky.social's profile of Rich Heyman really highlights the fact that NIMBY/YIMBY is an issue outside of economic and political systems. You can be a die-hard communist or a die-hard capitalist and "be in favor of housing nearby, but just not *this* project".

We're doing better at "building homes lowers rents", but we're struggling with "we need to overbuild commercial spaces" for much the same reasons. Art needs those rundown commercial spaces no one else wants. Rude Mechs just mailed me a history and they paid $600/month for the Off Center.

violet allen@blipstress.bsky.social

People don't realize how necessary cheap rent is to the arts.

The counter point to what I reskeeted is most people do not want to build software (including many software developers who want to write code). It feels like the future is bespoke homelabs that you pay someone to help you customize. SAAS is dead. Long live SAAS.

As a dev, there is a whole range of emotions you might feel when someone can one-shot things with a single prompt, and feel those even more as the companies we work for invest in the technology and force us to use it... But what happens when what our company does starts to become democratized?

Is this before or after the plastic bags and Styrofoam cups blow out of the back of the truck? Those without homes in my neighborhood get blamed for these trash distributing trucks, but we had the trash before we had people camping.

The War on Cars@thewaroncars.bsky.social

They’re both carrying the same number of people - and probably the same amount of cargo.

I've switched to Music Assistant + Tidal at home and it has fewer "play some pleasant enough music" features. At first I was thinking I need to build something, but I've realized maybe I need to actually pick out what album to listen to next. This might be a good and decent break in my day.

This is a very interesting YIMBY concept out of London. Giving commercial renters a voice in government. Austin has lost many local commercial businesses and there's very little actual advocacy for them past slogans. Would we have more neighborhood shopping centers if commercial renters could vote?

Borners@borners.bsky.social

Exactly, the Livery companies are dominanted by office tenants i.e. not the landed interest. Everywhere else the electorate is systemically biased in favour of the landed (owner occupier) interest. And the councillors are 90% homeowners too.

In capitalism doesn't class solidarity require providing cheap rents for new businesses? New businesses provide the opportunity for labor to vote with their feet and prevent labor from being controlled by a few large oligarchs?

I will accept James Patterson's takes on genre writing, but pretty much no one elses. If you think "formulaic" means "easy to write" that just says to me you haven't tried it.

Can we, like, not judge people on physical appearances just because we don't like them? That doesn't suddenly make it okay Also it's just really immature Like there are millions of things you could criticize that won't have an unintended blast radius

Attacks on Ms. Rachel is just a way to get the next generation to go "no contact". You must make sure the fox news watcher can NEVER have a normal conversation. All topics must be banned to keep the peace. They must feel hounded and persecuted by having a bad take on every possible topic.

I really gained a better understanding of this visiting Central High School in Little Rock. It is the most amazing high school building I've ever seen. It looks like an ivy League college and it's huge! It was obviously the white community's pride and joy and they walked away rather than integrate.

Sherrilyn Ifill@sifill.bsky.social

So much of what we are confronting today is best understood by the actions undertaken by white communities in response to integration orders. White supremacy is a form of democratic nihilism. Every institution, norm, and value of democracy will be sacrificed for it. calendar.eji.org/racial-injus...

I also understood why black parents were *pissed* about the "separate but equal" going on. Definitely no *equal* happening.

One thing I've been thinking about - city jobs that pay cash at the end of the shift and that you can just show up for. This would be mostly beautification work. Preventing homelessness would be so much cheaper than helping people get out it.

Would need jobs that could be done with transportation/mobility problems. So some level of desk jobs. The goal is not really productivity, but to have a dignified way to get a helping hand up.

This is sad. Netflix needs more sitcoms. Peacock with Stumble, Reggie Dinkins, and the Paper is clearly leading, but so pricey. Also they like to cancel their sitcoms too.

Bad (tho not shocking) news: "A Man on the Inside" will end with s3. Excellent news: Final season cast includes Nick Offerman, Bernadette Peters, Rachel Dratch, Annette O'Toole, Christopher McDonald, Jessica St. Clair, Diedrich Bader, and Stephen Root as Charles' estranged brother.

I waffle on this constantly, but I keep coming out more on the side of AI destroying capitalism. At least as far as art is concerned, although maybe everything. If there's no money to be made because AI can do it all, then all you're left with is the human connection and act of creation itself.

Like I never wrote my plays with the expectation of money, but now that that's off the table I'm even more focused on just amusing myself and my friends.

How do the "we're doing tree trimming in your neighborhood" spam texts keep getting through? They're fundamentally the same text every time, I don't understand why basic spam filters aren't catching them. Also is this the world of AI agents?

Isn't this the entire Republican brand now? Take any positive relationship, government service, or media and inject racism, sexism and/or scams?

I’m a Texan trans kid who almost died because of Ken Paxton. The world should know what he’s done. This was very difficult for me to write, but given what's at stake, I cannot bear to stay silent about what I went through at Paxton's hands. He must not be rewarded for what he's done to trans kids.

transiticsnews.comI’m a Texan Trans Kid Who Almost Died Because of Ken Paxton. The World Should Know What He’s Done.Regardless of Talarico’s recent statements on trans people, Paxton cannot be rewarded for the extreme suffering he’s inflicted on me and tens of thousands of Texan trans kids.

I feel like the AI hacks don't emphasize how many tools already exist to allow your internal services to pull down packages, images, etc from a local server on the LAN without going to the Internet at large. If you need an airgapped sandbox off the shelf products have solved pretty much everything.

i genuinely don't know if this helps them in an election, hurts them, or does absolutely nothing in either direction. neither do any of the people doing these things! but i care about the dignity of trans people and disabled people and i don't think those things should be for trade in any case

They built a bunch of "luxury" housing in Austin and the complex down the street from me is now offering 1263 sq/ft - 3 beds for $1,190*. And there are still more new units being built. Making it easier to build means more units. More units mean cheaper rent. YIMBY works. * It might be cheaper now

An urbanist mantra from "The girl who fell beneath fairyland" I'm a monster."... The Minotaur glanced up at her. "So are we all, dear," said the Minotaur kindly. "The thing to decide is what kind of monster to be. The kind who builds towns or the kind who breaks them."

PBS keeps reposting this and the headline drives me batty. It mirrors anti-refugee language. In the article: "climate change is really making this part of the Mediterranean, especially the eastern part of the Mediterranean, really unsuitable for native species," So is the problem the new fish?

PBS News@pbsnews.org

Scientists say climate change, caused mainly by burning oil, coal and gas, is making the Mediterranean Sea hotter, bringing hundreds of new and invasive fish species that decimate indigenous populations. https://to.pbs.org/4q3nQLY
