Marisa's entire piece is terrific, but this part has really stuck with me. A group of College Republicans decided that El-Sayed wasn't "welcome" in the Senate and set out to stop him.

SCOOP: 'Tommy' from the now-viral exchange with Abdul El-Sayed is Thomas Teepell, a former staffer for Republican Senator Josh Hawley with close ties to Christian Nationalist Sean Feucht. He's the son of a former Bobby Jindal staffer whose consultant work was instrumental in getting Hawley elected.

🧵🧵🧵 The NY Times posted a 15-minute video today in which I got to tell NYT what’s wrong with its coverage. They said they saw my critical posts on Bluesky and invited me to do a video with them to air my grievances. Weird, right? I didn’t hold back. I blasted their sanewashing of MAGA extremism.

One thing about how Washington "works" is there are legal niceties to observe while paying gobs of money to politically connected people. Quids and Quos are supposed to be connected by at most a wink, not "hey I sent you $300,000 already and you better start delivering"

Maybe it's just easier to have a fight over banning members of the press from the White House than it is to deal with the many other things weighing down the administration. In my 30+ years reporting, hostility to the press often is inversely proportional to how badly things are going for the pol.

Libraries make us a harder target for authoritarianism. Equal access to info, ideas, and space that doesn’t require a purchase to belong. Also: using the library means money stays in your community instead of streaming out to Amazon. 📚 What’s checked out on your card right now?

No, No, no. Look, are there lessons to learn from this debacle? Sure. Drone warfare, mag depth, etc. But the solution here is not 'yet more tactical excellence or tech.' It is 'the president asked the impossible of the military and they should have said so.' www.theatlantic.com/internationa...

A good start to solving the Social Security problem.

I don’t think it’s hype, I think he has it in him to become a 2028 frontrunner. I wish there were some polling on what is numbers are among people who know who he is I think that’s what convinced me Obama could pull it off, back when Hillary was “inevitable” in 2006/7, but the Obama people kept…

Unfortunately, these two don't seem to know whose work ethic "actually" built this country - the cotton economy, much of Washington DC, the Transcontinental Railroad, etc. - slave labor. Having money to buy people to perform labor is not really work ethic, more like evil greed.

If LM and SC held the line earlier in the process or after a vote defeat, the dynamics might well have been different. Hard to say what the ultimate result would’ve been, but that Collins gave her political capital to BK at al…and giving the whole “I believe what he said about Roe” nonsense to boot.

I pulled a physical book, myself, from the library today. I haven’t done that in a bit because I tend to buy the books I read. Sometimes RAs will pull them for me or they’re online. But there’s an art in finding the book you were after and browsing the nearby titles—spending time lost in the stacks.

A lot of attention is paid to craft traditions in Western Europe and North America, such as handsewn Hermes leather goods and bespoke Savile Row suits. But the uneven focus leads some to believe that things made outside of these places are low quality. This is not true. 🧵

Suzanne Vega releases “Luka” 39 years ago this weekend. She said she once received a fan letter about it: “Dear Suzanne, Luka is the most compelling piece of music I’ve heard in a long time. There are no words 2 tell U all the things I feel when I hear it. I thank God 4 U, Prince”

An extraordinary piece of writing that you will not regret reading. (and I am not transgender or a parent of a transgender person).
