really helpful essay, even tho i believe in a spectrum of variably shitty skynets we should be concerned about. when an untrustworthy industry is telling you it's destroying the world, don't let yourself become negatively polarized into assuming you're safe.

"Besides being deeply cynical, Chomsky’s supposed pragmatism has not stood the test of time...We may have manufactured consent once upon a time, but America has long since transitioned to a post-manufacturing economy." Very harsh but worthwhile read. strangematters.coop/noam-chomsky...

I apologize for nothing and only wish I had gone even harder. If someone wants to argue God isn't non-binary, they can tell me (in detail) what they think his penis looks like and how big they think it is.

It's me, a Telegraph columnist, taking a break screaming bloody murder about fairness in the women's sports I wouldn't be caught dead watching to wax lyrical about academic integrity in sociology, a field I consider to be fake, at institutions I consider to be communist indoctrination centers.

the economy is the last common ground between leftists and fascists, and therefore the only issue the media (and, well, people) can talk about without being accused of ideology by increasingly polarized factions. there's nothing the economy could have done to dodge this priority-defining spotlight.

You know we're in uncharted territory when The Economist is citing Karl Marx on their Trump coverage.

"AC good" is not a significantly better stance than "AC bad", imo. some parts of europe should have a lot more AC (esp. now that europe's climate is warming up so much), but i hate the AC-only approach to heat management that feels so american to me.

we need AC: like plastics and fuel, nothing compares in terms of adaptability. you can still build to encourage air currents, paint your house white, plant vegetation, insulate, open windows when dark, seek already cool spaces for leisure, etc. it's often cheaper and way more sustainable.

nationalism is inherently right wing; all it does is exclude an outgroup. in the case of the nascent israel, the outgroup was the majority of the local population! it's not surprising that the good intentions died when the project's integrity demanded extreme violence against a massive underclass.

The post that got me the most hatred on the Old Site was that Israel is, in many ways, a leftist experiment and part of the reason leftists hate it so much is the don't like the result

this isn't a "no true leftist" situation. by my definition, there are many millions of leftists. narrow selflessness is indistinguishable from selfishness, but wide selflessness exists. nazis also used liberatory rhetoric to justify oppression; nothing leftist about that.

there are many candidates for the epitaph on the end of history's headstone, but right now "we raised our kids to be better people than us; unfortunately, they were" feels pretty apt

we put out a new free thing at @brainfruit.bsky.social today, a pixel-painting toy called MOSS. i'm not a great or even good pixel artist but i love noodling on a cozy constrained canvas with weird brushes and infinite undos. it's at the centroid between asesprite, procreate, and pico8 www.moss.town

I keep thinking “my god the people they’ve killed seem like exceptionally good folks” and I think the lesson there is that they’re not exceptional, but that wonderful people abound and that a baseline distrust in humanity is a shitty conservative trope that privileges power over collective strength

they should let you buy apples at the apple store, like at least if you ask, they can make them $1,000 and what happens id that the guy says 'wait a minute' pops to walmart and puts it in a white box before giving it to you but they should let you do that as a bit

i remain resolute in my confidence we will win and it will be because we stuck together. dooming and fatalism is not how any of us will get out of this mess. i’m saying this as a veteran climate journalist who is a trans woman. if i have more hope than you, think of what that says about your view

We've got Gavin Newsom et al. eulogizing a version Charlie Kirk who did not exist, Trump et al. blaming his death on leftist violence that didnt happen, and the entire media apparatus denouncing Dems for dancing on his grave, something no Dems are doing. Has The Discourse ever felt more unmoored?

The takeaway: 👉 Accommodating the radical right on immigration doesn’t win back voters. 👉 It alienates the progressive base. 👉 And it raises the salience of the very issue the radical right owns. In short: it’s electoral self-harm.

...absolutely incredible. Here's what Medieval Bologna would have looked like when all its towers were intact. Florence didn't have so many but did have dozens, so the richest part of the city center would have looked much like this. Much to the despair of the city fire brigade! 11/?

every news article right now: Donald Trump says the world is flat. But is he right? We talk to a squirrel for its opinion. The squirrel: GIVE ME MY NUTS Well that settles it. Is the world flat? It's inconclusive.

On Google maps, whenever new satellite images replace old ones, the erasure can be seen side by side with the adjacent older photo. I don't know how frequently they update.

today i started polishing it. i used the tool i was talking about to generate some colors, added tabs for "about" and "options" and started experimenting with those options... as expected, i'm getting a lot less done today, but i'm pretty happy with where it's getting bsky.app/profile/word...
