I thing I’ve come to realize in the last few years is that there’s habitat and there’s “habitat,” and you need to be damn sure which it is. losing peanut fields or pines-in-lines is not much of a loss. losing a pitcher plant bog is. You have to fight for the latter like your life depends on it.

Opposing a big grocery store on its own merits does seem pretty dumb. Is something actually being preserved, or is this sentimentality about a monoculture pasture?

Batting was a neglected rescue but he responded to the hoisted shitter prank with more dignity than i can muster in a good week

I gotta fix the gap under the front door. Guessing Dekay's brownsnake and Pterostichus cf. permundus or the undescribed one thats got a different pecker. They both smell really bad

I see you baby! Love the spikes on the bum of this Wool Carder bee which it uses as well as spikes on the side to chase off other insects that come in to its territory. Nikon Z9 Sigma 150mm macro SS1/1600 F8 ISO3200 #macro #insects #bee #woolcarderbee #insectinflight

That time I put almost all the chipmunk species in the western USA on one map. Did you know there’s 1 species of chipmunk in Asia, 1 in eastern USA & >20 in western USA? (I’m not the crazy one here. The chipmunks are the crazy ones.)

The american elites' aesthetic envy of the european nobility has always been pathetic and contemptible and probably the source of a lot of societal troubles but I'll be damned if their award ribbons for little animals don't better match the honor and esteem observers should feel for their recipients

Yet another blood boiling story about US misrule of its temporary satrapy in Iraq. Bush II/Bremer bombed Iraq's seed bank; banned seed trading; and turned Iraqi agriculture over to US agribusiness. Shameful. Kudos to these volunteers for their efforts to recover some of Iraq's plant heritage.

In 2003, the U.S. military bombed Iraq’s national seed bank in Abu Ghraib, effectively eliminating hundreds of varieties of indigenous seeds adapted to growing in the drought-prone desert climate. A year later, U.S. law prohibited Iraqi farmers from seed saving. (First published in 2025 by Prism)
