Connections Puzzle #1234 🟪🟪🟪🟪 🟩🟩🟩🟩 🟦🟦🟦🟦 🟨🟨🟨🟨 Solve order blue-yellow-green. Didn't really solve purple. This one did have a couple of really disorienting tricks and I admire it for that.

Look, I know all the reasons we got here, but we really need to start seriously thinking about what we do in a world where The Markets punish whole countries for voting for decency, compassion, and fairness. We must stop pretending the capitalist machine is an objective, value neutral force.

Lewis Wade 🗃️@wadehistory.bsky.social

It's very, very telling, I think, that the markets are so concerned about the pro-democracy incumbent winning

If I ran things, in-person voting would take place on the weekend, and results would be released with a holiday, and people would be encouraged to have parties. Maybe voters could even match in a parade, tossing patriotic trinkets and candy. Voting ought to be cooler. And everyone should do it.

for those of you unfamiliar, the most powerful social unit in Cincinnati is your high school class, which outranks friends, family, even lovers

Kirsten Bladh@kerstanley.bsky.social

Over 2,000 alumni from Vivek’s all-boys catholic high school in Cincinnati have signed and circulated a petition demanding that he pull the ad and issue a public apology for “ignoring the moral responsibilities” of his Jesuit education. I think he’s pretty cooked.

This is stunning news. Bauza was *ubiquitous* in American animated film and TV--he has 422 separate IMDB credits, and most of those are for multiple roles on a single show. And with good reason; he was extremely creative and a superb mimic.

People who think embracing GOP hatred of trans people is the only way for Democrats to win in that part of the country should remember that in 2025, John Ewing became the first Black mayor of Omaha NE by running this ad. He beat Republican incumbent Jean Stothert by 12 points.

Erin Reed@erininthemorning.com

Josh Turek of Iowa, Democrat, comes out with one of the worst anti-trans ads yet. Not only is it an anti-sports ad, it proposes a ban on federal funding for gender affirming care. That would hit all medicaid and medicare patients, and any ACA federally-subsidized plans as well. Horrific.

He knows being outrageous gets a response at rallies, so he says things that will get a rise out of his audience, like praising a man’s ass, or talking about Arnold Palmer’s genitals. The message is mostly “can you believe I’m saying this stuff?” using outré statements as a signal of sincerity.

"I was a dumbass for X, Y, Z reasons. Material reality made me see the error of my ways" is actually incredibly uplifting stuff, especially from a 25 year old with a blue collar job and a HS diploma. He was a teenager during Trump 1

Maybe that's him and/or his immediate political successors. Maybe it's some new thing following in his footsteps and expanding on his precedents for what you can get away with. But it's a binary choice. Either you shut this kind of thing down hard and decisively or sooner or later it will work.

It’s a subject that makes a lot of people uncomfortable and calling them corrupt and evil is easier. But the truth is that Republicans have a rape problem—one that they celebrate.

penbucket.bsky.social@penbucket.bsky.social

Extraordinary. I can't believe your story may be the first time the Republican's acceptance of the rape and abuse of woman and children has been spoken of in such clear terms... considering how goddamn long it's been going on.

Now that Donald Trump has made clear that he thinks that this ad is fair game, actual fair game is using the time up until election day asking every Republican candidate running if they think that this ad is fair game or not. No need to constrain this question to just Republican candidates in Ohio.

Greg Sargent@gregsargent.bsky.social

The deeper reason Trump, Vance, and Ramaswamy are backing the vile rape ad is they think MAGA politics—the cruelty, the depravity, the viciousness—is still ascendant. They think doing this esesentially puts Trump on the ballot. Me and @jimswift.bsky.social on this: newrepublic.com/article/2169...

"You haven't convinced me," who gives a shit, man. Literally who gives a single shit. You don't have to be convinced of reality or decency for the rest of us to recognize reality and value decency. Your failure to be convinced is a point in favor of excluding you and ignoring you, not engaging you.

Trump didn't like Ramaswamy until he saw him sticking up for child rapists and their enablers. He hated the Ivy League until Cornell had a prominent fraternity gang-rape story in the news. He's not just a rapist, not just a serial rapist—he's a rape *enthusiast,* and it's why Republicans love him.

Wait, no, the plan was to hit urban areas, right? If it's hitting rural areas that implies they've screwed up and shot themselves in the foot (which is not so surprising, these are not smart people and some of this is being done by winks and nudges to true believers who may not get the message.)

Trump: "Ramaswamy put up a very powerful Ad about a mother saying that her daughter, Acton, is a liar, and much worse. The Press is trying to get him to 'take down the Ad.' Frankly, anybody whose mother spoke about daughter that way would normally lead to the daughter being precluded from serving"
