High streets are an important part of modern Britain. It's where afternoon drinkers go to get interviewed by news reporters for their views about immigration.

James Ball@jamesrball.com

The British syndrome, summarised: 78% of us say our high streets are important to us. But only 28% of us actually use their local high street even once a week – and only 53% of people said they used theirs *once a month*. We won't use it, and we won't lose it.

If the historic county folks had the courage of their conviction they would include the enclaves and exclaves in their “county map”. But they don’t. #CeremonialCountySupremacy

The Government can simply change the rules on announcing things in Parliament first -- why don't they, rather than routinely ignore it and get told off by increasingly irate speaker

Easy to complain that you see nothing from the Lib Dems but the Deputy Leader and Treasury Spokesperson did a press conference today about the Lib Dem budget asks and nowhere to be found on the BBC.

Convinced I hold my horrible, wet liberal cosmopolitan views because it was the only halfway decent free online news when I was an impressionable teenager.

I have never seen coverage of a live trial, one involving allegations of multiple sex attacks on multiple women, framed in a more distasteful way. It's not 'Fame under fire' it's a rape trial. And it involves actual women. And this from the *checks notes* BBC

Putin's bombs are killing Ukrainian civilians, and Donald Trump is funding them by buying Russian diesel. The UK must stand up and call this what it is: another Trump betrayal of the Ukrainian people and European security.

what is to stop other people getting giant speakers and competing with/drowning out steve bray, at what point would he get bored

And they're no longer doing their Quality Street collaboration — decline is all around us!

Hate, hate, HATE that John Lewis has replaced their usual Christmas themes with “your decoration style” this year. It’s functionally the same but worse!!

It’s also been years since a properly good one – give me cozy, snowy countryside and nature themes back and you’ll get lots of my hard earned money!!!

My basic view on this Lib Dem drama is that timing your coup the day after the Greens have lost a by-election, and just a few days after a Tory conference where they have shifted focus onto your Southern seats, shows a lack of nous that should instantly disqualify you from running for the job.

politics.co.ukLib Dem MPs urge Greens to defect after ‘Zionism is racism’ voteLiberal Democrat MPs have invited Green members to defect after the party’s conference voted for a motion declaring Zionism a form of racism.

I find the Green Party’s demands for puritism from all others so bizarre when combined with the sincerely held belief by a good chunk of their members that half their MPs are landlords (which should be banned), TERFs and racist

Jack@jhol95.bsky.social

Pretty dark day for the party when the motion looks set to pass despite opposition from MPs and former leaders practically begging not to do this. Crank takeover is complete and the party is lost for now.

It’s interesting that on the Northern Line it goes Kings Cross St Pancras –> Euston and on the Victoria Line it goes Euston –> Kings Cross St Pancras

I’m sorry but I don’t know who is buying this guff “we are going to lose but the numbers say it’s really close, the problem is getting enough activists to come down” is a classic of the by-election genre and is used solely to get more activists down. www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/labour...

From Politico. That motion is absolute fucking poison and by failing to stand up to it, the Greens have allowed that poison to seep into the party.

MP who spends his time complaining that we're not doing well enough in the north and Labour-facing seats draws the line at capitalising on the government doing an unpopular thing to high turnout voters

‘For the birds’: Lib Dem MP tells Ed Davey to ‘think again’ on triple lock defence @tomgordonld.bsky.social says the argument that it helps millennials is “at best for the birds, and at worst downright insulting” Full quotes 👇 www.politics.co.uk/2026/10/for-...

Follow along for other top big-brain hits, like going on TV after the local election results to say they were shit while the party tries to build momentum off half-decent, spinnable results.

Why Ed Davey decided to do weird attacks that don’t land and don’t meet the mood of the country rather than a lap of “Labour have listened to us but must go faster and further” I don’t know

Craig Grannell@craiggrannell.bsky.social

I was listening to @quietriotpod.bsky.social earlier and the presenters remarked that other leaders are finding it hard to respond to Burnham. This is a case in point. AB basically unveiled a Lib Dem wish list, but Davey has gone on the attack – perhaps in part since his own conf was a damp squib.

When did "Great British" become the demonym of choice rather than just British ("Great British Grid", "Great British Energy", "Great British Rail" etc.)

Never worked from home for any extended period of time before and I do not know how people do this, it’s incredibly lonely and I feel trapped in the house!!! Never been less productive

Half of Labours problems is because they listen to 25 year olds in London who have never spoken to a single voter in the life; the other half is because they hate 25 year olds in London

Keir Starmer’s plan for government, to the extent they had one, was to grow the economy and use the proceeds for better public services to make Britain feel less broken. A large reason why he couldn’t do that was the cost of his anti-immigration policies.

I’ve seen this repeated a lot over the last few days, but it’s a pretty disingenuous point given turnout was down nearly 8%
