went to the Steve Reich at 90 birthday celebration at Carnegie Hall the other night and it was so special, opened with one of my favorite compositions (Electric Counterpoint, 1987) played perfectly by Bryce Dessner of The National

ran the San Francisco marathon a few times and a sign that stuck in my head is a version of this: "Nobody made you do this" I repeat this to myself when I do other uncomfortable activities (steep hikes, visiting malls, etc)
Spotted near the 30km marker at the Antwerp Marathon, a spectator holding a handwritten sign: “Je hebt zelf voor dit gekozen” (= “You chose this for yourself”)
an incredible, almost overwhelming, exhibit. one reaction is it’s unfortunate the work is not more evenly distributed across museums. there are many things I had never seen, even though I grew up in Philadelphia (where there’s one large permanent Duchamp gallery). bremser.tumblr.com/post/8307653...
this blog post greg.org/archive/2026... is really just a pointer to @wayneb.bsky.social's photos of the Duchamp Philadelphia exhibit at his post about Duchamp's champagne boxful of handmade stereoscopic view of Étant donnés www.tumblr.com/bremser/8307...

#NowPlaying Another previously unreleased Don Cherry set out soon & I might dig it even more: Don Cherry, Leon Thomas, and sitar and tabla player Collin Walcott in their only documented performance together at Pease Auditorium in Ypsilanti, Michigan in 1977. wewantsounds.bandcamp.com/album/sunris...

Today the original artwork for 'Time Out,' by the Dave Brubeck Quartet, sold at auction for a record-breaking $576K. Its artist and designer, S. Neil Fujita, is part of a brilliant new exhibition at the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia. Here’s a piece I just wrote about him, and the show.

listened to this and took the afternoon off to finally see it. the formal language from 2500 years ago is astonishing and the "Linen Book of Zagreb" may be one of the most historic things I've seen - a text cut up and stained because it was used to wrap an Egyptian mummy.
Talked about the Etruscans with the great Renée Dreyfus. Her show at the Legion of Honor, 'The Etruscans: From the Heart of Ancient Italy,' is worth a plane ticket to San Francisco. news.artnet.com/multimedia/e...

Yes. I remember my mom standing up for herself whenever she felt discriminated against as a divorced woman. She got her bachelor's when I was in elementary school and then a law degree. She always had a strong sense of justice and she loved to help clients she thought were being treated unfairly.
Also, I think global second wave feminism is one of the most successful and consequential social movements in human history.

excellent story and on-brand for Philly that its most beloved painting is so visceral. (for whatever reason prefer seeing it when they hang it at PAFA)
When my dad worked at Jefferson Hospital he'd walk past The Gross Clinic & stop cold. When it was up for sale he was furious. He said it had to be kept local & it had to be open to everyone. It's the only painting I ever heard him talk about. When I finally saw it - share.inquirer.com/wzEPo9
