I thought the 49ers were playing in Santa Clara, but then I realized the game is on right now at ... (too early on the west coast). Sounds like the 49ers fans have taken over the Atlanta stadium? I guess this is what happens when your team isn't doing well? Or is this normal for Atlanta?

First time I recall Claude addressing me this way after I did something it asked me to do: "Thanks, Gabe. I'll fix X and do Y now." Is it now gonna say "I'm sorry Gabe, I'm afraid I can't do that" if I ask it to do something that breaks a guardrail? #2001ASpaceOdyssey #Claude #AI #LLM #Yikes

I worked in a coffee shop in the SF Embarcadero for 3 mornings, until I the third day where the manager didn't schedule anyone to come in the afternoon, and left me alone with one other employee after like 10 hours and ... wasn't anywhere to be found, no response. So we shut down and left.

Helluva demo but there's no way that car is gonna be legal on public roads in that form. Also, can someone besides that dude pleas do cool tech stuff? Literally, can someone please take the mantle of doing the future away from him?

Seattle apartment buildings used to be called things like "The Cedar Arms" and now they're all called FLUX or interSector. Even if I was in tech, I would not want to live in FLUX or interSector.

Like, are these guys often useful idiots for fascists? Sure, of course. But are they intentionally pursuing being tools of the authoritarians? Most of the time, usually not. Why does that distinction matter? Because 50k+ people who voted for Trump voted for Zohran just a few months later.

I wish there's a way to tell all the political fundraisers and mail lists to stop sending my deceased dad mail. He won't be voting or donating money. Ironically as a kid I remember "stuffing envelopes" and labelling "slate cards" with him, as my dad was very involved in grassroots SF politics.

OK there was a Elvis Costello joke/reference in the latest episode of Ted Lasso and it went over well and that make me happy a lot "I don't want to go Chelsea" is my favorite Elvis Costello song to sing.

I wonder if gitlab's downtime is making the LLMs noticeably faster - people not able to get work done reducing demand, at least at the margins...

This is really worth a read if you are progressive/lefty/liberal and you are concerned about the politics of supporting trans rights/existence in America, and why it's not the same fight as same-sex marriage earlier this century.

Gillian Branstetter@gbbranstetter.bsky.social

When Democrats attempt to triangulate on trans rights, it's my sense that many liberals and people in politics don't understand why many trans people are so upset. I wrote about the differences between then and now, what trans people have lost, and what we still stand to lose

Dolly Parton's take on AI in 2023: “I hope nobody can ever replicate me or what I do. AI is a scary thing. I’m sure it’s a good thing for scientists or medical things. But when it comes to trying to duplicate a human being and every little thing they are, it don’t seem right to me. It’s too much.”

Hot. take: If you can't dress yourself, your prospective partner really should know that. But then again, maybe you are looking for a partner who appreciates you spending money on fixing your personal deficiencies? My wife appreciates my lack of style. She is my stylist. It's wonderful.

Getting frustrated with the weird audio in zoom - specifically the inability to level individual participants in a group chat. In frustration, we tried out discord (turns out everyone on the team already uses it for personal stuff) and the experience was *SO* much better. Why zoom no do better?

Pro-tip: If you have a safety deposit box, keep an up-to-date list of contents, keep your keys somewhere your inheritors (or lawyers etc) knows about and also make sure to mention in writing to the bank and in your will that specific other people can access it. Also maybe not use Wells Fargo...

As the chef would say, "Now I'm cooking with tokens!" Chuckling with a little horror at that dual meaning. But it captures my morning zeitgeist. #AI

A near future where gig work is reduced to being sensors and actuators for #AI systems that design and execute business processes. Even doctors would be just sensors and actuators. Kinda lays it all bare, doesn't it.

We were taught to write like lawyers in law school. It's a highly structured and stilted way of communicating but the words have specific value, so it's accepted. I recently learned of "Simplified Technical English" and wow. I wish I had known about it a long time ago. www.asd-ste100.org

Watching me and a very experienced teammate use coding #LLM tools very differently. He gives it a bunch of very precise structured information, precisely defined skills, etc. I start with a statement of intent/goal, and iterate a lot (more). His process: precise tool guidance My process: socratic

Maybe its the law school alumni in me, but I feel way more natural getting to a complete picture of "truth" by using this iteration (which *is* something software engineers are very used to). Asking questions, getting unexpected responses. It's odd to people who think of LLMs as having *knowledge*.

For me, it's the somewhat chaotic/stochastic discovery process that leads to the highest confidence in the end-state. I've had a conversation with a separate entity that helps me expose blind spots, buttress or deny assumptions, etc. *Really* good at that, as long as you keep pushing.

Words have meaning. It's what lawyers build their entire world view around. And it's also what LLM's build their world view around. It's *not* what most software engineers build their world view around (*code* & *data* have meaning) Interesting watching SE's struggle with being word-focused.

Washington State is on fire (east of the Cascades) and now we are getting the reminder here west of the Cascades. You can see the air turning yellow and brown minute by minute out here in the Snoqualmie valley. Time to inhale and hold your breath Seattle. #wawx #airquality #smokemap

It is utterly pathetic that the Seattle-area press are so-focused on the amount of time it took to disperse information to the press, rather than focusing on the underlying crime and why it happened and how it could be prevented again. Lots of thinly veiled agendas in the local press here.

I wonder if people who insist on calling me to have conversations understand that 95% of the calls I get are spam and if its important you will leave a voicemail or email me or something. Phone is a broken communications mechanism except between people I already know. Useless.

Anyone who wants to complain about the Seattle Freeze needs to be introduced to the Seattle Sizzle that we are currently experiencing...

OK, I know its a little early, and I might be jumping the gun a bit here, but I am just gonna say what we're all thinking. Jimothy for President in 2028 AMIRITE?! Seems like a shoe-in. #Jimothy

I mean, I realize we haven't checked him for nazi tattoos or heard from anyone (yet) about his past interactions with women, but I got a good feeling about this one.
