When Ann Arbor’s stated city policies, staff experts, and sustained community advocacy are all aligned in favor of #SafeStreets, it makes it harder for elected officials who ran on platforms including transportation safety to change course. Even as they are harangued by reactionaries. #A2Council

SAVE THE DIVISION BIKEWAY EXTENSION. The planned extension cannot happen unless Carey Street is converted to one-way. Tell CityCouncil@a2gov.org that you are in favor of the bikeway and the conversion because these improvements support our climate, transportation, and safety goals. #a2council

Carey St. is the short street that connects Depot to the Broadway Bridge. The uphill right turn onto the bridge is dangerous, with poor sight-lines. This is coming up because the Division Bikeway Extension would add more bike traffic across the turn movement. See the FAQ in the project page:

engage.a2gov.orgDivision Bikeway Extension Catherine Street to Broadway BridgeWelcome to the Division Street Bikeway Extension Project page. This project is the DDA-led extension from Catherine St to the southern boundary of the Broadway Bridge.

Even without the bikeway extension, and regardless of how bikes are routed across the Broadway Bridge itself, this turn movement is dangerous and needs to be removed. Council has made safety the policy priority, but they need to follow through. Safety can’t wait, and your advocacy is essential!

I really want one of those signs to put up outside a local coffee shop in #AnnArbor today...

Overhearing parents talk about not feeling comfortable letting their kids walk to school because of the roads. Meanwhile, "real residents" fighting tooth and nail against making roads next to schools safer because they might have to spend 10 more minutes in the car. #a2council

I hope that Representative Morgan’s constituents will urge him to put the safety of all road users above the speed and convenience of cars, as city policy states we must do. Someone who is so heavily involved in decisions regarding our transportation system should know better.

Tomorrow is the first day of #WeekWithoutDriving! #A2Council

Families for Safe Streets@familiesforsafestreets.org

It's almost #WeekWithoutDriving! For the millions of people who aren't able or prefer not to drive, transportation is a daily challenge in many parts of the US. It's a chance to put yourself in the shoes of those who don't drive and learn how we can create communities that support mobility for all

Ann Arbor already prioritizes safety, according to our Transportation Plan. We are seeing slow progress, though, and still, some want to halt progress. Council, we need you to be bold in your support of staff. You already set the policy, and they are trying to carry it out. Cover them. #A2Council

Bike/pedestrian networks don't take 30 years to build. Stop accepting those timelines in your community. The best practices have been proven & they already exist. Safety should already be the #1 priority. The ROI is unbeatable. The timeline is a moral document and it shouldn't be generational.

Thanks to everyone who showed up at last night’s Ann Arbor City Council meeting to speak up for transportation safety! We loved this article that quotes several of the wonderful comments you all made about the Division Bikeway extension project in particular. Safety can’t wait! #A2Council

This open house was really energizing. We had some great discussions with city staff, and it’s clear they are willing to work toward Council’s stated goals. They need your support and they need Council’s support. Empower them. Don’t let the anti-safety activists create the frame. #A2Council

Only a couple days until we convert a parking space on S. State at Liberty into a space for people, not cars! We'll have comfy furniture, activities, and friendly faces. Urbanism Club and Wolverines on Wheels will also have parklets. Come through! Then, find us at Green Fair on Main St. downtown!

“Northside residents” who attended a meeting called by anti-safety and anti-housing activist Tom Stulberg specifically to spread misinformation, build anger, and organize around blocking Ann Arbor’s plans for a road diet are against said road diet. Shocking. #A2Council #AnnArbor #VisionZero

Ann Arbor has closed the B2B trail through Gallup Park due to failing culverts. We don’t want to discount this safety issue. But if this were a roadway, and drivers were affected, the city would have prioritized creating an alternative. As usual, people outside cars are an afterthought. #A2Council

Something should be done with construction barricades and Jersey barriers to repurpose a lane from Geddes until the corridor is restored. Make it one-way inbound in the morning and outbound in the afternoon to accommodate commutes. Cars going the other direction can be detoured to Glazier Way.

There is no viable alternative route suggested. No detour posted. Users are expected to “plan alternate travel routes” themselves. Neither Geddes nor East Huron River Drive have sidewalks, let alone bike lanes. There’s no timeline for filling those gaps.

Usually, negative feedback is the loudest. But persistent, enthusiastic, and supportive feedback from the community will counteract it. Your voice matters! Motornormativity is a huge barrier to getting safe infrastructure built, and pushing through it is a heavy lift for staff and electeds alone.

City staff are have done a great job on community engagement with two walking tours of the project area. The next in-person opportunity to learn and provide feedback is an Open House on September 23 (Wednesday) from 5-7 p.m., at the DDA offices in Kerrytown (see link in original post for details).

Speaking of anti-safety advocates, the road ragers are out in force against this project too. They are gathering to sign petitions to block it, saying that staff responsible for the design should be “sacked”, and showing up to public meetings with bad-faith questions and sarcastic remarks.
