New: Mayor Zohran Mamdani and a group of his friends have been secretly using the NYPD Police Academy’s gymnasium in Queens to play pickup basketball — scrambling some operations at the facility. w/ @grahamrayman.bsky.social & Joe Anuta www.politico.com/news/2026/10...
RFK Jr has an observation here. The difference is whether your conclusion is 1. “wow, white people must be hundreds of times smarter than everyone else!”or 2. “the systems of the US—particularly its universities—are incredibly valuable and allow people to flourish where they otherwise wouldn’t”
RFK: "There's five hundred million Arabs in the world. And yet they don't produce science. They don't win the Nobel Prize. They don't win the Fields Prize. They don't win the Wolf Prize. They don't produce literature."

Reminder that the White House put Barack Obama and his wife in a video of them as apes and the Saddam Cheesecake Factory line was his comeback 8 months later
Young ‘uns: this stuff happened once a week during Obama’s presidency. Dijon mustard. Moving a bust of Churchill. Inviting a rapper to the White House. Putting his feet up on his desk. They’d scream and cry for days about how effete and snobby and Black he was and how misinderstood they were.
The only Musk business that doesn’t rely comically on government support is X
Innovation’s gains reach far beyond the innovator. Musk can be insufferable to some, but reusable rockets, Starlink, and electric cars benefit millions. Personal dislike is no reason to obstruct human progress, writes Cato’s Marian Tupy. https://ow.ly/R92751013ZC

Our political system hasn't decided that Donald Trump isn't a rapist. it has decided that it's ok that he's a rapist.
NEW: "Donald Trump was an active participant in Jeffrey Epstein’s sexual abuse of young women during the mid-to-late 1990s," per new House Judiciary Dem report. Report has new allegation that Trump raped a 24-year-old and then promised the victim a visa & NYU admission, demanding she stay quiet.

I keep having versions of this conversation with researchers IRL where they want so badly to draw an Ethical AI Usage line that allows them to use it to avoid writing/analyzing/editing/reviewing/publishing BUT still requires everyone else (not AI) to read the resulting research product.
I made an anthracite coal forge in the backyard out of an old grill for the younger kid to play with, and it’s been great. (I am doing 90% of the operations, to be clear)
Fireplaces may be the strongest "pet beavers building dams indoors" instinct I know of for humans. The source of warmth, food, and civilization for half a million years, now totally obsolete, but still makes us feel those things more so than any substitute.

When scum from all over the world like Madison Cawthorn go there on a pilgrimage to take smirking selfies, it is not serving any historical purpose. It’s just a Stonewall Jackson statue.
Hitler's Eagles Nest (Kehlsteinhaus) deliberately destroyed today. Part of me likes history being preserved, but another part of me doesn't give a shit, it was a monument to one of history's most evil men. Thoughts?

They don't want an adult on par with them they want an adult younger and less powerful than them
also, and not to diminish undergrads, you're all adults with agency, the ability to vote, and soon the ability to drink legally, but like holy SHIT y'all are what would charitably be referred to as "youths" like good god how can you teach them and still be like "yes this is an adult on par with me"

One distinct way that I’ve moved to the left is that I used to discount claims like this, and now I find it hard to understand the world without them.
It’s never been more clear that racism is a scam perpetrated by wealthy elites to convince working people to blame someone other than the wealthy elite.

LeBron James has won 3 Olympic gold medals for America and has implemented $0 in tariffs on US consumers
Trump: "While listening to our National Anthem, LeBron James disrespects our Country! I said right from the beginning he’s no good, a TOTAL DISGRACE. LeBron James should apologize to all of those Great American Warriors & Heroes who died for the American Flag, & all that our Country stands for!"
I was going to say this but lacked the courage to until seeing Tod’s post: America is way less racist than in the 80s and 90s
Seems crazy to say in 2026 because it doesn't *feel* better day-to-day right now, but: the way society treats people who are LGBTQ. Not even close to what it was when I was a kid and a young adult.
I think the reason race has become a more salient issue in politics now is because earlier there was a consensus. (The consensus was bad) bsky.app/profile/rive...
