Been having some funky performance issues in FFXIV since yesterday, in which the game slows to 35fps... whenever the controller cursor is on the screen? Enabling the software cursor seemed to indeed put the game in a permanent 35fps state. Nasty! Luckily, I was able to fix it
This article on The House in Fata Morgana is a front for an existential crisis over a defunct history park, which in itself is a front for an article on how incredible The House in Fata Morgana is.
Thank you so much to @mothership.blog for letting me write this! It was a really great experience.
Free with your email, today's piece from @ashhuntly.bsky.social examines how we retell history, and why The House in Fata Morgana does it so well: "This is the danger of telling history only by folding paper in half: the imprinting marks both sides."

Was unsuccessful in jailbreaking an ancient (circa 2012, deteriorating rubber, barely holds a charge) Kindle, but it turns out the process was fairly trivial on my 11th gen Paperwhite, so now I can play Doom on it or whatever. More importantly, no more ads! And KOreader rocks
Now, I don't know a whole lot about nothing', but I DO know there's a special place reserved in hell for the scam caller who threatened legal action on my deceased mother
A fairly obvious scam, but enough to shake me up a fair bit during an especially difficult time, so... yeah, not great! Guess I gotta figure out how to better filter out scams on this new phone. Grumble grumble
Been reading more ADHD forums and resources lately and... oof. The pieces really are beginning to come together. Lots of talk of burnout cycles that mirror my past several years to an eerie degree. This shit is real, and it is so incredibly destructive
The Great Burnout of 2022 turned my life the fuck upsidedown, harmed relations with one of my favorite clients, and I STILL haven't fully recovered from the fallout or mental strain. ADHD explains why I've always struggled with the feast/famine cycle of freelancing, that's for damn sure
Officially traded in my iPhone today after a bit of a probationary test drive with this de-Googled Pixel 10a, and feeling pretty good about it! It's a modest device, but it handles everything I need it to perfectly well, and crucially, I actually feel like I'm in control which is KINDA NICE
Noticing a bit of a theme in recent years with my obsession with taking control over my gizmos and minimizing my exposure to toxic baloney, really make's yuo think
Games and stories are imitations of life, ways of playing at life, sometimes ways of learning how to live. Some of the rules may appear both cruel and arbitrary. But if you want to play the game, or live the life, you have to follow them.
All arguments in favor of Windows over Linux are one of these:
1. Still need Photoshop or whatever (the valid one)
2. Based on decade-old info and/or jokes
3. Blaming issues with Linux on Linux users while treating the same issues on Windows as an unpleasant inevitability, like wasps or earthquakes
there's a premise in harmony by project itoh about losing consciousness by automating the human body and mind. "the harmonious brain is a brain with all uncertainty removed" it's ironic that these guys argue ai is conscious when they ultimately want to live an unconscious life
maybe i'm old fashion but the coolest thing about video games is being taken to new worlds that i hadn't thought up and experiencing something exciting that the artists behind the game want to show me
Grimdoomer has just released the first version of the "Peer Pressure" softmod for the Xbox 360, giving code execution at boot time, within 20 seconds, with no hardware modifications required, supporting the majority of console motherboard revisions!

Localization of dialogue is an art. Building engines and tools is art. Concept art is, well, art. Even placeholding art is art.
If design or architecture are art forms then so is any act of building tools or systems. It's all art.
And every AI model is built off stolen art, from every art form.
I've seen a lot of programmers really disrespect themselves thinking that genAI is "fine" when it comes to coding or w/e because it's not "art"
Programming is an art. It requires creativity. And you're literally programming graphics, it's visual art. It's just art. It counts. AI coding is AI "art"
Annoy me with ads? I'm gonna go out of my way to block them! Annoy me with emails or notifications? I'm opting da heck out! Annoy me with AI? You're dead to me! They're saying it's a Fuck You October (I'm they. But also he)
New phone who is this. Haha jk I know who it is! I'm not THAT stupid! Anyway, it's really weird but refreshing to be back on Android. GrapheneOS rocks. Everything Google is absolutely vile (and I'm sandboxing it to hell and back, where it belongs)
This Pixel 10A is a tad smaller than my 14 Pro Max, and a TON lighter. Feels nice! Comparable spec-wise, a slight upgrade overall, I'd say. But being able to use all kinds of fun FOSS (Morphe patches, KDE Connect, keyboards...) makes it a big ol' juicy upgrade to me
A few days later with everything purrin' like a kitten and I'm loving the experience. It's the same feeling as swapping from Windows to Linux. Takes a bit of conscious effort, but it's well worth it. So much less ick. It's like, tech hygiene. A bidet of bits and bytes. It's better this way
My wife just suggested we go halfsies on one Diet Canada Dry at a time as opposed to two at once so as to maximize the carbonation efficiency which is 1) the most romantic thing I've ever heard, and 2) proof that we're both on "the" spectrum

Google Play is somehow 10x more disgusting than it was the last time I used it, just putrid. Luckily, most of what I need is on F-Droid or Obtainium, or otherwise easily sandboxed from Play (banking apps, etc.)
That bittersweet feeling when you wrap up a project, made even more so when it’s a particularly special one. And all the MORE so when I’m now taking a conscious step back from localization for a while to recuperate and shift gears. Kind of a little terrifying! But this is necessary!
I’ve been stuck in a destructive cycle of burnout for way, way too long now, and forcing myself to continue down this road will only end in catastrophe. At a certain point, the universe has a way of bopping you on the head with a cosmic newspaper, and buddy, I’ve been omega bopped a dozen times now
steam: this game you've had installed for two years but never played has an update. we'll download it next week
me: no you'll download it right now motherfucker. and i will sit here and watch it download.
steam: so you're gonna play it?
me: fuck you
