I have not thought about The Coleman Report in 2 decades and it is suddenly everywhere in things I read. It has been so long, I can’t even remember how I felt about it originally. 🫠

Trump: "Collins could call me anytime he wants. 'You gotta help the farmers!' ... there's a big difference between that and Pee Wee Herman calling. 'Tell him I'm not in!' 'But he needs money for Georgia.' 'I don't give a damn what he wants!' Probably I shouldn't say that."

Matthew Yglesias continues to say that talking about ICE and excessive force in immigration enforcement helps Republicans. He is obviously wrong about this and refuses to acknowledge the data. Way past time for everyone to update their priors on this.

Kid is autistic & does not want to wear a uniform (the foreign language charter). All school choice options in commuting distance in our district ended at grade 4 and there were 800 applications for 200 seats. I live in an affluent area and parents have peaced out for private for MS. (2/x)

Straw poll says he will not be with his friends who are mostly pursuing private. Test scores are not be all and end all but having gone to a meeting for rising 6th graders, I do not think that the outcomes are an accident. Anyway… This just all seems… bad … but fixable if we had vision? (3/3)

She needs to get with Jon Ossoff’s ad team and tie this to the Epstein issue.

Twenty states now require teacher candidates to pass a certification exam in the Science of Reading. Do these exams screen on who will be better at teaching reading, or just shrink the teacher pipeline? My job market paper answers this with data from Texas a 🧵 edworkingpapers.com/ai26-1615

Revising our QBE funding formula in Georgia is incredibly important. Only one Governor candidate (Lance-Bottoms) & 1 State Superintendent candidate (Powell) feel that urgency. (I’ll add my son’s SPED services are way better than some higher ranked states but that is not funding related).

Unpopular opinion; studies and critics debunking learning styles are taking on low hanging fruit & are avoiding answering the more difficult & much more useful question ‘How can we better differentiate instruction so we can reach every student in our classrooms?’

I made a lengthy post on my Facebook page with reasons why… but Georgia, don’t split your ballot by voting for Richard Woods for State Superintendent. Choose Lydia Powell who is reallly informed on the issues!

I am reading the Oregon School Shooting press conference updates on the NYTimes blog and it is very triggering. I assumed by the mixed ages that it was a special education classroom and that was indeed the case.

Everyone is wondering about the polls. Woke up thinking Jennifer Medina of the @nytimes.com needs to go back to this barber shop and give us an update report. All the Latino barbers talked about was how they liked Trump for cultural issues. Curious how they feel now.

What I really need to know as someone who lived in this neighborhood for 5 years… what business was here before? 🍿

I appreciate this episode about our district and its introduction to the Budget Committee Cinematic Universe as a lot of the “wonkery” part of DeKalb’s storyline is similar to other districts. Hopefully not so much the “bonkers.” One thing about our E-SPLOST… 🧵(1/x)

In DeKalb, we have had zero ESPLOST V schools 100% remodeled or built per our Quarterly Status Report in June 2026. That is a WHOLE decade. Remodels for Stoneview, Kingsley, Rock Chapel are stuck in “design.” Cross Keys & Dresden are set to open next year, hopefully. (3/x)

As of June 2026, this is the status on our ESPLOST V projects. They are of differing complexity. We have zero ESPLOST VI (Nov 2021) projects complete (Kittredge HVAC was actually just deferred to ESPLOST-VII on this Nov ballot). Taxpayers- and especially parents- have a right to be tired. (4/4)

It can’t really be captured in one episode, but the result of being stuck in bad accounting & estimating issues for decades is taxpayers don’t see things get built. In neighboring Cobb, they budgeted for a 1k seat elementary school in their ESPLOST-V ( Nov 2016) and it was open in Aug 2020. (2/x)

Watching the GA Governor debate and both seem to want to “fund” a lot in “education”… but not K-12 education. Fix the QBE.

I think I finally going to get a WSJ subscription after years of avoiding it. It’s just expensive, plus ownership. But their news reporting is undeniably good.

Hiring a permanent superintendent was one of my top 3 campaign priorities and my preference was Dr. Sauce. Congratulations & I look forward to working with you!

🎉 CONGRATULATIONS to Dr. Norman C. Sauce III on being named Superintendent of Schools for the DeKalb County School District! We look forward to continuing the work together as one district, moving in one direction and #ForwardTogether for results. 👏 #DCSD #TheDeKalbDifference💙🧡

It’s confusing that @theatlantic.com described this man as a “a lifelong Democrat who had voted for Trump for the first time in 2024” who when these are some of his very easily findable FB posts:

Mr. Dan Zak@mrdanzak.com

A Haitian man legally immigrated to Ohio, then was given an ankle monitor bc Trump withdrew his status. He threw himself in front of truck. The trucker, who voted for Trump, is haunted. “Pierre was doing what he was supposed to do. We did not do right by him.” www.theatlantic.com/politics/202...

I would like the current Teach for America CEO to stop talking about AI and TFA as a “first job” to prepare for the AI economy. It is creepy. His recent interviews stopped me from registering for the summit (I was on the fence).

Dr. Horton pleads guilty Monday morning, about 30 minutes before our board meeting where we are scheduled to hire Dr. Sauce. Oh hey, look at that. The article about all these crimes that I sent the Board before they fired him is an exhibit for the government!

Samuel Ross turned on Horton and pled guilty. Recommended sentencing is 37-48 months. Hearing for other 3 defendants tomorrow morning.

In news on our indicted former superintendent: One of his co-defendants, Samuel Ross, is changing his plea from not-guilty. Ross’ texts with Horton were published by the government. The joke is the work was fake. Can’t imagine why he would try to avoid trial. 👊🏻🥂

Really good piece. As a parent and someone in the middle of redistricting conversations/reader of NHJ, I am curious why academic tracking was not here- I don’t know what quadrant it would be in, but it is top of parents’ minds. We had a rising 6th grader meeting… (1/x)

Systemically, how do we get more than 36% proficient in MS? Individually, how do parents know their kids needs are met? Collectively, how do we manage this to also not impact enrollment? (3/3)

Also… until our district published live-in students as part of redistricting, I was naive how few families send their kids to public school in my area, especially middle school. We have one of the top performing elementary schools in the whole state.

We were told the only advanced MS learning path is the dual language program that starts at another elementary school. Admissions stop at grade 1. There are 2 Carnegie courses for grade 8, but that is it? My son scored 98%ile on his math standardized tests. Only 36% are proficient at his MS. (2/x)
