How do cells sense tissue damage - and help their neighbors withstand it? Our new paper on the redox-sensitive 5-oxoETE lipid pathway shines light on this question. A huge THANK-YOU to all the colleagues and funding bodies that made this work possible! www.nature.com/articles/s41...

nature.com5-oxoETE links redox control of epithelial damage detection and resilience - NatureThe DHRS7–OXER1 pathway links oxidative stress to immunity and tissue resilience by modulating 5-oxoETE via NADP+–NADPH, activating OXER1 to recruit antimicrobial cells and induce NUDIX enzymes t...

Had a great time at #ZDM19 and #ZII9 presenting my postdoctoral work for the first time, and reconnecting with Duke and infection folks. Very grateful for the opportunity and this community, fish people are the best 🐟

Smith and Tobin lab contingent at a fantastic mycobacterial infection meeting at @pasteur.fr Inspiring to hear and see all the exciting work going on and be a part of this community in very strange times for research and public health.

Ten years ago Tami, Roy, and I released a movie we made of antibiotic resistance evolving in real time. I thought maybe a couple thousand people tops would see it. I couldn't have imagined it would be seen millions of times, and be taught from middle school through the graduate level worldwide

The US President's new proposal to tax international students has been approved by the White House for release this week. It's an unprecedented $100,000 tax on int'l grads who stay to work after graduation on Optional Practical Training (most grads do), a crucial bridge to remaining by any channel.

Reposting this ongoing search (any discipline of biology) for an Assistant to Associate level colleague in the Division of Basic Sciences at Fred Hutch. Great city, great colleagues, great core facilities, great trainees.

Harmit Singh Malik@harmitmalik.bsky.social

Come be our colleague. I have been in this Division for 27 years (4 as a postdoc and 23 as a PI). It is an amazing place to work, collaborate, and be inspired. If you are applying to be an Assistant or Associate Professor this Fall, don't miss this deadline.

Interesting article about SigD/RsdA in M. abscesus. Some over lap with TB regulon and function, but also many differences. It will be interesting to see if the proteolytic processing of RsdA is also by a Rip1 S2P. Nice work! 🦠https://dx.plos.org/10.1371/journal.pgen.1012286

Agreed - some of the potential damage overlaps with what the OMB proposal is attempting to impose, but this proposal would create some distinct additional problems that are worth addressing head-on.

Given how NIH analyzed and presented feedback for the RFI around PI caps for # of awards (percent in favor, percent opposed was the top-line analysis) I suspect it’s important to respond in large numbers to this proposal. Can likely reuse many of the concerns about the broader OMB proposed rule.

Abby Dernburg@adernburg.bsky.social

Biomedical scientists - a reminder that NIH proposes to "improve" peer review by hiding impact scores from Program Officers and applicants, and binning applications into broad categories of "Most competitive,""Competitive," or "Not discussed." Please provide feedback before the October 13 deadline!

For innate T cell enthusiasts, happy to share our preprint: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6.... We show that mycobacterial lipid–reactive CD1b-specific T cells transcriptionally resemble conventional CD4 T cells more than other innate-like T cells, challenging how we classify these T cells. #CD1b #GEM

Annual killifish continue to surprise us: they make neutrophils before almost every other cell type, even before gastrulation. Neutrophils usually arise from the lateral plate mesoderm (forming in cyan), but in killifish they are already patrolling around the embryo in gold. tinyurl.com/killiphil
