I've mentioned before I've updated my contracts to make sure everything in the production of my books is done by humans and not "AI"; if you're wondering what such a thing looks like, here's a clause covering that from a recent contract.

Trump brought more destruction to DC this weekend, ordering the cutting of 400 mature trees before courts could stop it. Same tactic as when he knocked down the East Wing. Riverbend Landscapes & Tree Service of VA did the cutting. They knew it was wrong. And you can let them know how you feel. 1/

More than 400 trees were cut down in D.C.'s East Potomac Park this weekend. A furious federal judge said the government failed to give proper notice of the work amid an ongoing lawsuit.

One of the best challenges I've ever accepted: write a manifesto for Oregon. So proud of this piece in @oregonhumanities.bsky.social Revolution issue.

Valarie Smith@valarie.bsky.social

“What if Oregon’s manifesto, going forward, were simple? Keep the air of this place smelling like the woods. Make the water so clear you can see to the bottom. Keep the coastline open forever. Make sure Oregon stays wild: in the woods, in the cities.” oregonhumanities.org/rll/magazine...

Apparently I’m one of the people eligible for the healthcare “refund”/bribe Tr*mp is mailing out. What in the capitalization hell is going on with this letter?

recently it was dark enough out for me to see stars on my walk home and I cried

I’ve become obsessed with the disappearing night sky. I miss going outside wherever I was and seeing the stars! Glad to be able to write about this for @us.theguardian.com. Thanks to the kind readers who have already sent me emails about their own night skies. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

I tried to go find a dark sky during the eclipse this year. It being Ireland (where there ARE genuinely dark skies, including a preserve in Kerry), I found clouds.

theguardian.comThe night sky is getting 10% brighter every year. We’re forgetting what darkness feels likeIf more cities start regulating outdoor lighting, we humans could make the environment better for all living creatures

This is who you’re hurting when you use snap traps! This young skunk reached for bait in the trap and got his paw stuck. He’d probably been there all night and might have been stuck longer if my friend hadn’t seen this and called me to help. Do. Not. Put. Traps. In. Your. Yard.

Skunks (and other wild curious creatures likely to get stuck in traps) really need their paws to dig and get food. Hoping his paw is treatable and he can be rereleased but often the injury is too big/infected which means euthanasia. Please do not use traps!

The FDA just approved daraxonrasib, a breakthrough drug for advanced pancreatic cancer that doubles survival time. This is huge: pancreatic cancer was once thought untreatable. The researchers received a standing ovation when they presented the trial results, unheard of at scientific conferences.

Absolutely delighted that I got to listen to this episode while on my way to release some rehabbed skunks. These stinkpeas had been orphaned and I spent so much time making them leaf-based skunk enrichment when they were in care. I think they were amazed to find crunchy leaves all around them!

SKUNKS. My dream episode. Tails, stripes, remedies, stomps, babies, rescues, and getting hosed by skunk musk. I met the elusive Dr. @jwdragoo.bsky.social. It happened and now we have a 2-parter on #Mephitology. An absolute instant classic: www.alieward.com/ologies/meph...

I know everyone in the world seems to love invites but I don’t want your calendar on my calendar. Can we just write things down separately and assume we’re all adults? I know I’m alone in this but it really drives me crazy. I have my colors and categories and don’t like when things look wrong!

Are you pro people having healthcare or pro explosive diarrhea?

NEW: Taylor Farms is a big player in conservative politics. The company donated $2 million to conservative political groups in 2025 and its CEO has personally donated more than $900,000 to Republican PACs and candidates. It's also spent $810,000 on anti-regulatory lobbying since 2025

When I worked in WaPo Opinions in 2017-2018, senior editors specifically told junior editors not to factcheck Marc Thiessen and other MAGA columnists, otherwise they wouldn’t be able to publish anything by them at all, and “we need them for intellectual diversity.”

Huge new class action lawsuit filed by big publishers and authors against Google this week over AI training. It accuses Google of taking millions of books / articles provided to them for use only in Google Books, Google Play Books, and Google Scholar, and secretly using them to train LLMs. 🧵 1/4

I’m rewatching The Lion King and can tell I’m in my 30s because I used to have a crush on teen Simba and now I’m like, damn that Mufasa’s really got it.

I cannot stress enough just how dangerous wildfire smoke is to breathe. If your air quality is bad because of fires, wear an N95 mask. It is not “just smoke”. There are heavy metals and chemicals and bad stuff that gets into your lungs and bloodstream.

Scientists haven’t been studying it long but have found even short term exposure can be very bad. Basically there is no safe level to inhale. This is particularly true for elderly, young children, pregnant people, and anyone with heart and lung conditions. Please be careful and spread the word!
