Rune Energy is focusing on creating #dataCenters where there is already excess power that the grid can’t take, eliminating the drain data centers usually have on the power grid. Its modular data centers will connect to solar farms that produce more energy than can be used. buff.ly/Nb0dC0E

My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

The U.S. government has awarded up to $1 billion to IBM’s #quantum foundry Anderon. They aim to allow quantum companies to design chips, while Anderon produces the hardware to craft them. buff.ly/0Jtu188

"While (social media age limits are) better late than never, neither the American or Canadian intervention addresses AI chatbots. We should be concerned not only about about the effects of AI on teens’ safety, but also, as recent data from global testing suggests, on teens’ learning." #onted #cdned

Peace in our time? Chamberlain looks like a mountain of resolute determinism compared to these clowns, both of whom seem more than happy to fall back on Nazi imagery when it suits them. Churchill would be able to take on both at once... and he's dead!

Mapping Global #AI Workforce Density www.talentoperatoros.io/reports2/kep... That's a handy map. It pretty much tells you where AI data centres should be built. Skip abusive policy targeting poor communities and build data centres where the people using AI are, since they want it.

#cybersecurity is a teachable subject. The challenge is that we don't teach how technology works in the first place and set students on a path to oblivious media consumption from the beginning. #cybersecurityawarenessmonth is an opportunity to teach how tech works. We reduce it to nonsense and nos.

Chasing your senior, most experienced teachers out of the profession early results in lower learning outcomes #onted. Which is what has happened: www.fraserinstitute.org/commentary/f... " #Ontario’s average science scores fell from 519 to 513, 524 to 494 for reading & 513 to 484 for mathematics"

"the OECD equates 20 points to about one year of learning, which means Ontario’s Grade 10 students are effectively 1.5 years behind in both reading and mathematics versus where the province’s Grade 10 students were back in 2018. This is, to put it plainly, an appalling result."

Back of the envelope calculation: everyone in Mexico, USA & Canada would need to spend over $7000/yr to balance the books on #AI. If that isn't a bubble what is? MIT economics prof Daron Acemoglu: "the industry is unlikely to reach (these) levels of revenue" www.brookings.edu/articles/fin...

Monday morning thread

As *tech*, AI isn't exceptional. It's not exceptionally wicked. It's not exceptionally good. Take away the accompanying, galactic-scale stock-swindle, and we'd call AI's apps "plug-ins" and we'd use them and abuse them in the same way that we've used every other technology: www.normaltech.ai 1/

Local, domain specific #AI could help students in all sorts of ways, but the 'leaders' in #education making decisions about which #AI your child uses grabbed the closest non-domain-specific training, non-structured input pipeline/environmental context injection #edtech & applied them haphazardly.
