New followers (👋) so little introduction; for the past 10+ years I've been releasing public domain game assets to support indies & students. You can donate, but it's totally optional. I hope to continue supporting our industry for many more years to come, thanks for your follow/support! kenney.nl

I love the narrative integration, the courses, and of course the racing. Extremely well done. It's totally a me thing but it did make me realize how much I'm absolutely over this type of roguelike format, but it gets a full pass here because everything else is SO GOOD, and the combo IS fresh.

95 hours of my Dartmoor inspired moorland scene are done! This is the last full update you'll see of this aerial embroidery until its complete now, maybe 20 more hours? I've decided the tor-based area of the landscape will be sloped so I need to work on the little hill :) 1/2

My kid is 7 and Tears of the Kingdom is the first game world he's getting legit lost in. He's constantly asking, "What's THAT?" or yelling, "No WAY!" as his harebrained contraption actually works. Or getting scared by a giant creature. Seeing the sense of wonder at work is incredibly inspiring.

I'm immensely proud to announce that my texture library that's been in the making for nearly a decade is now available on my itchio store for indie devs to purchase commercial licenses. makkon.itch.io

I got a compact split keyboard to help my shoulders and now my brain is so confused I can't type on my normal keyboard anymore either. At least my shoulders feel great?

Today's news reminded me to kill my UE5 P4 server on DigitalOcean, mostly because I haven't used it since June. If you are a small studio, I urge you to check out Godot. I firmly believe it gets BETTER as your team size shrinks. I haven't moved this fast since Bungie's Sapien level editor.

One day I'll write how it's amazing for solos and small teams, but the tl;dr is: It's fast as hell and the workflow is more like live-coding ALL THE TIME. I often just leave the PIE window running and just code. No problems. You can undo/redo ***LIVE*** and everything just updates. Black magic.

“Tony [Gilroy] finally turned to me, and he said, ‘Hey, you just got to stop pitching plot. Plot is bullshit. Plot is what happens when you get the behavior right. Pitch me a line of dialogue, pitch me atmosphere, pitch me something visual. Stop pitching stuff that happens.’” 1/2

One of the best space combat sims of all time. Super smooth. Incredibly stylish. Can't recommend it enough.

Pleased to finally announce... Abdication, the last Southern Reach novel! "There will come the days of the watcher, the drowned woman and the shadow of a man who keeps falling apart with each step, but first comes the moment the birds appear at night from the gaps between the stars, far from home."

One of the canon space dogfighting games to me. 70% off is a steal

The more I code (I'm not academically trained), the more I'm interested in straight C, especially as my entity frameworks have veered toward composition as opposed to inheritance.

Some of this is coming from exposure to GDScript which is certainly not C but it DOES make you wonder, "What if I just did simplest version of <crazy system in some other engine>?" And it sounds dumb but the simple version often works, and it's customized for you.

An amazing graphics programmer friend said C was, "the language of the gods," and it's been rolling around my head ever since. I kind of brushed it off, but I see this take more and more.

Finding Crawl's curses version extremely elegant and clean. Everything the game needs is right here, but not more. Even the seemingly small tilemap is just the right amount of tactical information to move quickly through the spaces (and a full map is still available on 'X').

One thing I never did was a post-mortem of Sir. Perhaps this is as good a time and place as any to talk about some of that. It started in 2010 when Channel 4 had some money to spend on making educational games. For some reason they asked me. ->thread

In surprising computer game news: Sir, You Are Being Hunted finally made it to console, just fourteen years after release on PC. It's out now on Switch, PS5, and Xbox. (And Steam and GoG, of course.)
