Even if every country delivers its climate pledges, the world is on track for around 2.6°C of warming by 2100, says the new UN Emissions Gap Report. PIK’s Johan Rockström warns the damage could be greater still: if the US steps back, others may follow. economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/interna...

economictimes.indiatimes.comThe world is falling further behind on climate action, and the US looms largeHumanity is heading towards a hotter world due to increasing carbon emissions primarily from the United States. The United Nations Environment Programme has updated its climate projections,…

Blame Trump for Paris Agreement failure. If nations meet *all* their climate promises, (big IF) world would warm by 2.1°C by 2100. Last year that was 1.9°C but (included US efforts) US obstruction has added 0.2°C to current best case warming outcome www.newscientist.com/article/2594...

newscientist.comUN says 1.5°C is over and world is on track for 2.8°C of global warming | New ScientistThe best-case scenario now is that the planet will only temporarily breach 1.5°C of warming, but current climate pledges fall way short of that hope

The IPCC is pretty clear that if we want a safe climate there can be no new oil and gas. But every country thinks it has some special reason for why it should be the exception

Wednesday dissonance. UN: World needs to cut carbon emissions 45% to stand any chance of coming back under global warming danger limit of 1.5C this century. UK: Would you like another gas field? #Jackdaw #northsea #fossilfuels #climatechange

It's fine, I'm sure it's not urgent

The IPCC, the UN's climate science panel, has failed to agree a timeline for its next next big report. Was due in 2028, but some countries have been pushing for it to be delayed until 2029.

Are these going to be the right species that can cope w/ climate change? & is there going to be ££ to ensure new trees survive? “There’s always capital funding, so you can buy the trees, but you can’t necessarily maintain them" I'm told by those in the sector www.newscientist.com/article/2591...

newscientist.comUrban trees in south-east England can't cope with the changing climate | New ScientistIn cities such as London, trees are already struggling with hot and dry summers. Botanists warn that we need to start replacing them with drought-adapted species

In terms of messaging, this is very positive, and a big shift from the nature-hatefest of the Starmer administration. Mind you, most tree-planting is unnecessary: I'd like to see much more emphasis on natural regeneration. 🧵 www.theguardian.com/environment/...

New - Marc Stears, the director of UCL Policy Lab, is joining Number 10 as a special advisor to Andy Burnham. Close to Ed Miliband, Stears has done a lot of work and research recently on the splintering progressive vote, especially stressing the importance of climate

🧵Weather maybe getting cooler, but what has been the impact of recent heatwaves on public attitudes to and salience of climate and net zero? Two thirds of the public say they are worried about hot weather and 86% think climate change at least partially responsible.

With all August model runs now in (except for SINTEX-F), we now expect this year's El Niño event to peak sometime between October and December at a stunning 4C in the Niño3.4 region. To see all the latest numbers, check out the Climate Dashboard: dashboard.theclimate...

This really surprised me: a major source of certain pesticides in rivers is hand-washing by pet 🦮🐈 owners 🧪 “We detected [pesticides] in the wash-off even before we asked people to stroke their pets, so they’re just constantly on the hands of pet owners” www.newscientist.com/article/2583...

newscientist.comShould you stop using preventive flea treatments on your pets? | New ScientistIt has been assumed for decades that tick and flea treatments for pets pose no threat to wildlife or people, but there’s growing evidence that we have got it wrong

A first year above 2C in the mid-2030s now looks plausible. 0.5C was first passed in 1980, 1.0C in 2010 and 1.5C in 2024. The 15-year trend runs at 0.42C per decade. The 2026 and 2027 points for the current El Nino are estimates. We're not remotely ready!

The future of solar power is bright, finds @tinymaddie.bsky.social *Solar panels are cheap, and getting cheaper *Batteries are good, and getting better *Economic case for solar will overwhelm political apathy In short, we're going to run the world on sunshine www.newscientist.com/article/2500...

Here is our exclusive survey asking leading climate scientists to give their views on solar geoengineering: *66% believe we will see it attempted this century *52% say it will probably be done by a "rogue actor" *81% want an international treaty to manage risk www.newscientist.com/article/2498...

newscientist.comExclusive: Climate scientists expect attempts to dim the sun by 2100An exclusive New Scientist survey of leading scientists reveals widespread concern that schemes to tweak Earth’s atmosphere could launch within decades in a risky bid to cool the planet

This is.... not good www.newscientist.com/article/2500... Particularly because scientists increasingly suspect that the planet is locked in a vicious feedback loop, where climate impacts like drought & marine heatwaves are dampening the planet's natural ability to take up carbon

newscientist.comCO2 levels in Earth's atmosphere jumped by a record amount in 2024The global average concentration of CO2 surged by 3.5 parts per million to reach 423.9 ppm last year, fuelling worries that the planet’s ability to soak up excess carbon is weakening
