Amazon deforestation fell under Lula by 71%, to lowest level since satellite records began in 1988. There is a chance to save the most important biome on the planet

Is there anything more grotesque than wanting to bring back an extinct species into a world of suffering and loneliness? Well yes - wanting to genetically engineer dogs for the military

The organising by Lula's voters in Brazil right now is astonishing. They still might not win but they've put millions on the street and they have shifted the polls back to a tie -despite, in a friend's words, fighting "everyone -Trump, Meta, legacy media, the rich, betting companies, evangelicals".

As the UK government approves the Jackdaw gasfield, this UN report shows current policies take us to 2.8°C by 2100.

Joeri Rogelj@joerirogelj.bsky.social

A smaller gap but a worse future. Current policies, result in warming being kept below 2.8°C by 2100. The most optimistic case, where all NDCs and net-zero targets are achieved keeps warming to 2.1°C. This is a worsening from last year's report, mainly because of the policy roll-backs in the US.

Brazilian Amazon deforestation falls to lowest level on record as pivotal vote looms for President Lula New data shows forest clearance fell by 71.2% since 2022, the final year of Bolsonaro administration. Story by me www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Absolutely desperate. As @guyshrubsole.bsky.social was saying at the weekend: 50 MILLION pheasants are released into the wild annually. The biomass outweighs that of all native bird species combined.

This would be economically illiterate & environmentally disastrous - and makes us less secure: undermining efforts to reduce energy bills by reducing dependence on gas, increasing vulnerability to global dictators, driving climate emissions & knee capping a market that’s just beginning to take off

Brilliant to be on a panel with @rowhoop.bsky.social & Lucy Jones at New Scientist Live today - chatting about symbiosis, lichens, how being in nature is good for our health, how landowners release 50m pheasants into the countryside annually… and how to campaign against nature loss!

It's telling that men would rather try to invent tech to replace humans' role in caregiving than step up as equal partners in parenting. Telling, that is, in that it shows how financial capitalism and patriarchy work together to dissuade men from doing "unprofitable" labor, like the work of care.

It’s monstrous that people would consider trying to kill 1000 beings that are hundreds of years old and take 150 years to even reach sexual maturity, purely because they interfere with fishing for halibut. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Huge congratulations to all three Nobel Laureates, and especially Peter Hegemann! 👏 His seminal work on the green alga Chlamydomonas 🦠 laid the foundation for optogenetics. Thank you for putting Chlamy in the spotlight! ✨ Proof that groundbreaking discoveries don't always come from animal models! 🔬

I love it when my reading interests collide, as Alan Moore & Swamp Thing turn up rather unexpectedly in the final chapter of @rowhoop.bsky.social’s important look at the symbiotic interconnected nature of life in Togetherness!

Just finished the audiobook of Togetherness by @rowhoop.bsky.social and I can tell it's going to be one of those books that sticks with me. If you have care about ecology, evolution, climate change, fungi, lichen, plants, the gut biome, mutual aid, or just what it means to be a human, read it!
