The BBC's new director general has described a 50-minute AI-generated episode of Doctor Who as "pretty good," and suggested that the technology now enabled the creation of content "at the standard of a Hollywood studio." https://bit.ly/4rD8rmh

My point is I've been waiting a few years for the situation where AI can recreate a missing story from a script and telesnaps, was I wrong to hope that might happen?

If the script or Art are AI-generated then it isn't worth my time, money or attention & never will be. Simple as that. If this is the direction the BBC is going then I'll simply never engage with their media again. Disappointing.

I suppose I'll amend this in that that based on other responses in the post, it seems it was sent from a "fan" and not made by BBC. I'm not going to click the link to find out, the above statement still applies. For the time being I'll file the director's statement as "in poor taste".

The good thing is that individual content creators are able to produce quality content. This can end the woke storylines, the DEI messaging, and NGO pressured nonsense that ruined Dr Who for the last 30 years.

The Google plant, sorry - DG, not having a clue what the people love about The Doctor Now, if this twit were to cast themselves as the villain to be defeated by the Doctor… That’s something that we could all get behind

He works for Google "Matthew John Brittin is a British businessman who was president of Europe, the Middle East and Africa business & operations for Google until the start of 2025. On 25 March 2026, Brittin was announced as the new director-general of the BBC and he took up his post on 18 May."

There IS no good NuWho episode, and thus AI can’t ruin it. (Unless this was the season Billie Piper was back, which would, but that still wouldn’t be AI’s fault.)

I think they're about to find out how much people really hate AI slop. Reith would be spinning in his grave.

And those are the same that made possible the chapter of Van Gogh looking at his own art? The chapter of the child with the gas mask at the WWII? They really DON'T get it.

At what cost. Trillions of gigabites burning renewable energy and billions of liters of precious drinking water to cool. Stop this insane development

Wow. So much hatred for everything AI is just as bad as being an absolutist about anything else, yet here we are.

Sorry I'm not absolutely hating everything AI despite data centers. I'm just incapable of that kind of thing - totally despising anything. Nothing is absolutely evil or good. It's how things are used. 🤷🏻‍♀️🙄

This utter drivel is on screen within the first 80 seconds. Clearly the new DG is trying to suck up to Labour and Andy Burn-theplanet-ham. Either that or a total moron. Or both.

Before Matt Brittin became the BBC’s new director general, he was president of Google in Europe, the Middle East & Africa, and remains a major Google shareholder. His opinion on AI as a creative tool may be a tad tainted by that enormous conflict of interest.

I can’t even picture the sort of complete tool who would say this and mean it. As always, people who talk about how great AI gen content is are really just showing off their complete lack of comprehension and taste. I bet it is as good as the best AI slop that I have already seen.

I will never watch another episode of Doctor Who if this goes through. It's an insult to the legacy of the show and an insult to fans and everyone who has ever worked on the show whether in front of or behind the camera.

I hate AI as much as the next guy, but context matters: "Somebody sent me a 50-minute episode of Doctor Who that was AI-generated the other day," Brittin said. “It's pretty good. I mean, it's not going to replace humans, and we'll come on to that.”
