There are two reasons I never had trouble accepting Trans people. One is that I got a good biology education even before going to Uni to study it. The other is that I did read Terry Pratchett's fantastic books. If you can do both, but at bare minimum read the books!

He was very good in person with his trans fans too. Growing up going to SF cons, I met many trans people before I even knew what trans meant. I gave my parents very little they needed to accept in their child, so they had lots left over for everyone else. 😉 www.thepinknews.com/2021/08/06/t...

The pope taking a heroic stance against machine intelligence makes a lot of sense when you consider that machine intelligence has a lot in common with classical demonology. A convenient sycophantic servant can be summoned at will to help you with minor tasks, but it comes at a cost to your soul.

'I'm a busy guy, I could write a whole treatise questioning whether Christ actually owned the clothes that he wore or I could just ask Claude to tell me in five seconds. Oh sorry, I've been naming the demons. This one's called Claude.'

And so on. When it comes to machine intelligence I'm afraid I'm the guy who leaves early in the play and tells Faustus he's doomed for meddling in affairs he doesn't understand.

I was having this conversation with a good friend last night. Imagine you're in Wittenberg in the 15th C. and all of the other scholars are summoning demon familiars. 'I know it's ethically grey but I'd never tell it to actually WRITE anything, God forbid. I just use it for research.'

'Look you just have to accept that this is what the future of publishing looks like. You didn't complain about the printing press, so why are you complaining about my room full of demons copying manuscripts at ten times the speed?'

I was meant to be at the Lire en Poche festival in Gradignan this weekend but I've had to pull out for health reasons (I seem to have caught the nasty vomiting bug that's been going around). Apologies to any French readers who were looking forward to getting their books signed!

I run a D&D game set in 1918, in which the dastardly Hun are summoning dragons to try and win the war. One of my players, my friend Hugh, plays a trench-raiding barbarian with a wild boar painted on the side of his Sopwith Camel. My mother - a quilting extraordinaire - made him this amazing quilt!

Quilt no. 180 - my son asked me to make this for his friend’s birthday - he’s into WWI, dragons, wild boar and his family tartan! Quite the combination 🤭

I'm an author with historically bad mental health. In the past four years my MH has improved dramatically due to meds and therapy and having great friends. I still fall into the trap sometimes of thinking that I can ignore self-care as long as the writing's going well. I'm here to say DON'T DO THAT.

I know this rationally, but even so. Sometimes I start to treat myself like the reluctant caretaker of an inefficient biomechanical writing machine - instead of treating myself like a fully integrated human being who happens to write books and who deserves nice things like living in a tidy flat.

So I always try to tell aspiring authors that YOU WRITE BETTER FROM A PLACE OF HAPPINESS and also that YOUR HAPPINESS IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN YOUR WRITING. You might think that nobly suffering in a leaky garret will get you posthumous fame but I promise that there are easier and more enjoyable ways.

It comes back to the old malicious stereotype of the starving writer in his garret suffering for his art. Take any writer from history: I guarantee they'd have written better work, and more of it, if they were well-fed and comfortable and remembered to spend time with friends who cared about them.

I just read a third or possibly fourth news article where the reality of an 'AI has discovered something marvellous!' story turns out to be GenAI somehow accessed material it had no permissions for, which was the outcome of an expert's years of work, and presented it without attribution. GenAI lies.

I'm beyond proud of my good pal @padswa.bsky.social. He's one of the writers I most admire, because of his determination to pick himself up and keep writing brilliant fiction even after setbacks and rejections. I'm sure DRAGONFLY's going to be a huge success. www.thebookseller.com/rights/harpe...

I have been drawing for fun and also sketching ideas for a book I'm working on and it's been bringing me great joy and contentment and fulfilment. At no point did I think 'gosh, I wish I could get a terminally stupid robot to do this for me'.

But then all of the tech bros have convinced the government to massively overinvest in building data centres to produce more of this dross, and it would be Very Bad for The Economy if the bubble were to collapse, so I suppose it's unpatriotic of me to point all of this out

The battle to keep global heating from passing the agreed 1.5-degree threshold has been lost. This should be an era when human ingenuity works to save the planet from catastrophe. Instead the tech broligarchy is busy embarking upon ludicrous AI data centre “infrastructure” fuelled by coal and gas.
