Getting ready for TGS and thinking about the fun Japan blogs I used to do. One of my favorites was The Worst Nintendo DS In Japan. This was when you couldn't find DS on shelves. No box No instruction manual No stylus No strap No AC adapter Scratches on case Scratches on screen 10,000 yen.

Can't get more elegant and classier than the Nintendo DSi XL! Launched first in Japan as the DSi LL with the colors Wine Red (Burgundy), Dark Brown (Bronze), and Natural White on November 21, 2009.

Nobody makes video game hardware like this anymore

In addition to having large 4.2-inch wide screens (vs. 3.25 inches on DSi), the DSi XL also introduced a bulkier pen-like stylus. The muted colors, larger screens, and pen-stylus definitely made the system feel at-home for older gamers already captivated by games such as Brain Age and Picross 3D.

On a 73-day trip from the base of Mt. Everest, up to its summit, and back down again, Chris Grubb and Neal Mueller made history by making the #NintendoDS the first video game system to be played atop Earth's tallest mountain above sea level.

Learn more from the full interview, which is still available to read in full on the old Gamespy website. Also, this post (lifted from our retired Twitter account) is a mere three days off from the interview's original post date of July 8th (2005), 21 years ago to the day!

On a 73-day trip from the base of Mt. Everest, up to its summit, and back down again, Chris Grubb and Neal Mueller made history by making the #NintendoDS the first video game system to be played atop Earth's tallest mountain above sea level.

According to their July 2005 interview with Gamespy, the pair played Madden NFL 2005, Super Mario 64 DS, and Metroid Prime Hunters - First Hunt as their entertainment. Although some of their equipment had faults with the mountain environment, the DS held firm throughout. In fact, they had 10 units!

20 years ago today (5/15), Mario returned to his platforming roots in New Super Mario Bros. on #NintendoDS! NSMB ushered in a new age for DS with its launch alongside that of the DS Lite in 2006, and a new age altogether for 2D platformers as the genre started to make its grand return.

Hell, I remember the US commercial for New Super Mario Bros. very well when it was being promoted on television, especially the #NintendoDS Lite feature. Truly a new Mario for a new generation! What memories do you have of the original NSMB?

Contact NDS is turns 20 years old in japan now, happy birthday! ๐Ÿฅณ๐ŸŽ‰ It's RPG by Grasshopper and published by Marvelous Entertainment. A unique & quirky game which you will love it if you love earthbound/mother. Main character design is by Atsuko Fukushima from PopoloCrois series!

Looks like it's finally official - Nintendo Switch is now the highest-selling Nintendo platform of all time. It's quite amazing in retrospect considering how long the DS held on to that achievement. Wonder if they could ever find a few more sales in the seat cushions like Sony did for the PS2. ๐Ÿคฃ

With 155.37 million units sold, Nintendo Switch is now officially Nintendoโ€™s best-selling console ever, after overtaking Nintendo DS during the recent holiday sales period. vgc.news/news/switch-...

On this day (November 21st) 21 years ago, we were all introduced to the dual-screened wonder that is the Nintendo DS! With a library of close to 3,500 games, 4 different model designs, and so many system variants across those designs, its two screens ushered in a whole new era for Nintendo.

Nintendo Switch shipped 910k units this quarter, down from 2.62 million units last year (-65%). Thatโ€™s over 154.01million consoles to date. Nintendo DS lifetime sales are less than 10k units away.

With the influx of dual screen devices we have begun adding support for these devices by being able to select which screen ES-DE runs on and which to launch games on.

That's a wrap on the stream! ๐Ÿ˜‰ Trauma Center: Under the Knife 2 has finally been beaten! I was thinking it would be done in under 2 hours, but chapter 7 whooped my ass - especially the final boss. Skipped out on VRChat sadly, because I am absolutely spent after all that time operating.

Also, seeing those dual-screen handhelds definitely sparked interest for me to consider getting one later down the line, and migrating my DS library I have on my Steam Deck/PC to it. But yeah, there's still movement behind the scenes. Just taking time to get it all together. [๐Ÿงต4/5]

I also thought about getting a TP pilot episode down by the DS' 21st anniversary next month, but work on that should've started already if I had that goal, so it's likely gonna be 2026 territory. At most, maybe an Episode 0.5 or something just to say "hey, it's not dead!" is more feasible. [๐Ÿงต3/5]

Obviously, nothing can be perfect out the gate + it's better to do the thing & make it good later but at the same time, I know it's something I'd like to honestly take time with. I'm already making moves to change the direction of SYLVER.STREAM in 2026 to work in tandem with THIRD PILLAR. [๐Ÿงต2/5]

Also wanted to get this out there while I'm somewhat lucid mid-work day: I still feel a bit upset that things stalled with THIRD PILLAR. I kinda got inside my own head about the presentation style, plus I wanted to dip back into seeing contemporaries and their output a bit more. [๐Ÿงต1/5]

The recent rise of dual-screen retro handhelds in the last year or so has been a joy to witness. Gonna need to compare/contrast some of these with DS models down the line!

A huge thank you to AYN for sending over the new AYN Thor for us to review! Already loving the device, and canโ€™t wait to explore the experience more. And yes, it feels perfect for any dual screen emulation with those OLED screens.
