What, mine eyes doth see? The Tragedy of Macbeth with Denzel Washington, Francis McDormand & Brendan Gleeson, directed by Joel Coen as if by Welles possessed, one foot in film, one theater. Silhouettes galore. No mannered elocution. Treachery in blood. Shakespeare for the people.

In celebration I’m gonna spend all day reading these instead of doing any other life responsibilities.

We congratulate Anne Carson, winner of the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature. Carson is a contributing editor at Granta and a regular writer for the magazine. In celebration, we have lifted the paywall on all her contributions to our pages. granta.com/contributor/...

It’s October 1st, which means I finally get to dig into this used bookstore find, which I’ve been holding onto since July. I think I read Frankenstein years ago, but it’s possible I only read it through societal osmosis. I guess we’ll find out!

The most interesting part of this article is buried below the “read more” button. The indigenous folks in the area have known about this cat for generations! They’re like “yeah, that’s the tilcayo 🤷🏻‍♀️” Maybe the rest of us, scientists in particular, should start listening harder to those folks.

Since we’re all apparently answering this… I think 20 y/o me would be over the moon that I’m actually living in Alaska now and have published some things, but largely confused by a lot of other things in my life.

Yes, thank you. I scream inside every time I see that note. And then I die just a little bit more when it comes up at the top of my own creative manuscript…

As both an academic and a writer, I am repelled by the "this looks like a long document. Would you like me to summarize it for you?" that seems to appear at the top of every pdf viewer now. NO. The *entire point* of good writing (either books or journal papers) is that every sentence has a purpose.

Reading one goat alt-text per day as a kind of devotional to keep my spirits up.

THREAD. A collection of photographs of excellent goats I have met during walks in the British countryside. You will find the all-important captions to each photo in the alt text.

This is, I think, the one and only Wendell Berry poem I've ever really read. And maybe I'm missing out on other great lines. But honestly, as a poet, if I can write one poem in my life that people remember and recite and share and *feel* something about I will consider that a wild success.

#RIP Wendell Berry 💔

What a ducking day at the fair! I mean, look at this lovely lady, straight out of Beatrix Potter's English countryside! (She obviously got lured away by a fox and has lost her bonnet and apron, poor thing.)

One thing nobody has considered is how this messes up the acronym I learned as a kid to remember the names of the Great Lakes: HOMES. HAMES? Or SHAME, I guess, which I suppose is appropriate…

that'll do it! WASHINGTON (AP) — Trump signs order directing interior secretary to rename Lake Ontario to 'Lake America' as Canada trade war persists.

“AI is a turd mountain” pretty much sums it all up.

Garrett M. Graff@vermontgmg.bsky.social

Wondering why data centers are as unpopular as nuclear waste? It's not the data centers. The problem is both more obvious and more fundamental: The daily lived experience of the AI boom sucks. www.doomsdayscenario.co/p/ai-is-maki...

Don't get my hopes up like that, TBQ.

Taco Bell Quarterly@tacobellquarterly.org

Getting real close to the bottom of the pile for TBQ8! Only have about 350 more to read and then I'm going to start rejecting. All of the writing (and ART!) is so great. I upvoted 5 (!) things in a row yesterday alone! The possible accept pile is huge rn. You're going to be crushed!

As someone raising a young boy and always questioning how to best help him grow to be a good man, I appreciate this thoughtful thread so much.

Laura Norton-Cruz, LMSW, CLC@lauritadianita.bsky.social

🧵1/ For young men confused about how to be a good, non-toxic man while also being "masculine" or for parents wondering how to guide their boys towards role models who are good allies to women & gender minorities while retaining hetero masculine street cred, I recommend u look towards Ryan Coogler.

Another data point in the “everyone is 12 (or under)” convo: I was answering some questions my 10yo had about the war, trying to explain who is attacking who and why, and he interrupts to say, “So, like what I do with my Lego guys?” And yes, exactly that.

Yes, the world is burning, but you can still get your MFA, and in Alaska nonetheless! (I mean, why not? After all, the world is burning...) Come read and write and frolic in the fireweed with me and our other amazing faculty and students this summer 😎

Quite chuffed (and apparently British) to see my name and book on this list! (Scroll down almost all the way and you'll find it...). Tons of great-looking books on this list - and we should all be buying all of them for ourselves and for gifts!

lithub.com100 Notable Small Press Books of 2025The idea of 100 Notable Small Press Books was born November 2024, after The New York Times’s annual 100 Notable Books list featured eighty-two books from the Big Five publishing houses (Pengu…

What fresh hell is this??? For reference, the “research” this AI has supposedly turned into an analogy is a couple of poems published in a university-linked literary journal. Like, I’m kind of curious to see what kind of “analogy” it made out of my lines… but also, WTF? Not today, Satan.

I want to point out that the kid holding the No Kings sign (which he made before the last No Kings protest), is my 9 (almost 10)-year-old son. He's been doing this since he was not even a year old, when he went with me to the 2016 Women's March.

Andrea L. Hackbarth@thelostintent.bsky.social

Deep red Wasilla, Alaska. #nokings

At least five different older folks said they were so glad to see him here today, that he's being part of history. Which maybe he doesn't totally get the magnitude of yet (though yes, he knows why we're protesting), but it's something... Something I'm not quite sure how to put into words yet.
