And the social aspect of Substack is almost certainly overrated! The reason people’s newsletters grow is because other authors mention them and link to them. That has *nothing* to do with the platform! Other platforms (Ghost, Beehiiv, Wordpress, Buttondown, Medium) have better economics, too.

Ghost is that platform. @theradr.bsky.social has written about how Ghost is an ethical nonprofit. It’s not that much of a pain. People like the convenience & social networking aspect of Substack. Then they try to convince themselves that’s more important than not giving a fucking inch to fascists.

Just to dispel the notion that Substack is the cheapest option for smaller paid newsletters than I described in my first example: ($ amounts represent monthly cost)

In the latest post on The Fiery Well I talk about leaving Google Workspace: "But for me, it was time to make the move. Convenience is coming at a price I can't justify anymore: security. Peace of mind. The fact that I fucking *hate* generative AI..." www.thefierywell.com/leave-google...

My kid is into Big City Greens on Disney+ and they had an episode on misinformation and the internet. I was blown away. An excellent conversation starter. 9 yo: but *why* would people spread misinformation? And on purpose??? Me: … well, my sweet child. People are … assholes.

As I break up with social media, tech monopolies, and all in one tools, I'm reminded of the internet of old. It required a lot of effort to find what one was looking for. It was a simpler time. Not necessarily easier. But it was absolutely more enjoyable. More intentional. Ah. So this is 40.

Astrology and capitalism go well together because their priorities both boil down to “doing business in the daytime.” There are dozens of ways this cross-contamination shows up in your astrological practice that you likely aren’t aware of. My workshop on Tuesday will fix that.

If anybody is worried about this, I will gladly play the role of "dude with the red string on the cork board" so you look sane by comparison. Because the reality is the richest person in the world is a nazi who snuck in at midnight to steal every American's data so he could shut down the government.

simply repeating the straight reporting of what is happening in the executive branch makes you sound like you have lost your mind.

Trump announces an executive order authorizing a 30,000 capacity migrant detention center in Guantanamo. "Some of them are so bad we don't even trust the countries to hold them because we don't want them coming back, so we're going to send them out to Guatanamo Bay."

I used to work for an elected official as the person who answered their emails. I can tell you from personal experience, if even twenty or thirty people all call an official in a day, they start panicking. This stuff does help.

I know you hate this advice. I know you hear it all the time, but for gods sake you need to be calling your congressperson. Now. Today. If you have a GOP representative, you need to call and ask if they approve of stripping congress of its constitutional authority. If they like being powerless.

Generative AI is essentially copy paste but with large datasets analyzed probabilistically. Maybe that's useful but it's not intelligence and doesn't justify the absurd amounts of investment it's attracted

Ha. I get a lot of spammy emails offering me loans based on the great business I run, but this takes the cake: "I see that The Fiery Well is a boutique restaurant specializing in artisanal wood-fired pizzas. We could help you with funding for expanding your kitchen facilities."
