Octavia Butler is a genius, and not just because she told the future in Parable of the Sower, but also because she turned the space invader narrative on its side in Xenogenesis in a way that her mostly white contemporaries couldn't have. In this essay,

People ask me this all the time, so I’ll just say: look at the transgender hate panic, a thing that had no organic element and did not arise from the public, and was instead imposed upon everyone by the world’s most hateful, poisonous and malignant media class.

If so, then to prisoners, the government acts as a monopsony for their labor. The government is the only entity the prisoners can sell their labor to, and therefore, the government can pay them pennies. The government then resells prisoners' labor at a discounted rate relative to market

This is obviously immoral. But I also wonder about the impacts on the broader labor market. Having below-market convict labor in the system must drive relative wages down.

Ruby Bridges was 6-years-old when she stepped into the history books. Bravely accompanied by her mother, she was the first Black child to desegregate an all-white school in the South. It was not long ago… Today is her birthday. She is still with us. She is 72. Happy birthday, Ruby Bridges 💜

Every single damn day men kill their family members, including an incident just last week where a man in MT killed 8 members of his family — 4 of them children. But you barely heard a peep about it in the national conversation. Men killing their families is so common there’s a name for it… 1/

The right-wing organizing around the Lindsay Clancy trial is growing and it’s frightening. A lot of people overlook these culture wars revolving around women’s issues, because, well, they’re women’s issues. But the right doesn’t. It’s how they regained such a massive cultural foothold.

Wow. Proponents of the ICE taser gloves are openly saying that one reason they love the gloves is that they doesn’t leave any marks or proof that they were used, making it harder for people to sue when they’re shocked excessively.

The tragedy traces back to an ICE stop and deportation of Nixon Giovanni Pérez Paz. A year later, amid acute struggle, his wife, Glendy, decided to "self-deport." Weeks after reuniting, the couple was found dead in a field. “If my brother hadn’t been deported…Both of them might still be alive.”
