Sweeping cuts to the premier US climate agency under Donald Trump have severely hampered the country’s capacity to forecast, research and respond to extreme weather events. Latest from @gabriellecanon.bsky.social: www.theguardian.com/environment/...
Nearly 10 years ago, I wrote a feature story making the case for universal childcare web.archive.org/web/20170126...
So it's wild a decade later to be able to write about the first U.S. state to actually have universal childcare www.thenation.com/article/soci...

New Mexico is the first state to enact universal childcare. It's already allowed parents to work more and left them with more money to spend. Providers are being paid better, although they're pushing to be paid more. www.thenation.com/article/soci...
Under Biden, the federal government required states to pay childcare providers based on enrollment, just like parents who pay out of pocket. Now Trump has walked that back and put providers in financial turmoil. www.the74million.org/zero2eight/w...

About 2 million kids have lost SNAP since deep cuts were enacted last year. The ripple effects: Kids losing SNAP also lose automatic enrollment for free meals at school. And as more kids lose SNAP, their schools may be forced to drop Community Eligibility.

I still can't get over the fact that more than half of the people who used to get food stamps in Arizona have been kicked off
In the year after the Republican reconciliation law was enacted, the number of people receiving SNAP fell by more than 20% in Arizona, Florida, Illinois, Louisiana, Nebraska, Nevada, and Oklahoma. Using more recent state data, add Indiana, Kansas, and Texas.

Criminals have been exploiting outdated EBT card technology to steal SNAP benefits from unsuspecting low-income families. Since December 2024, the victims of this theft have had no recourse & federal action to prevent it has largely stalled — for a deeply infuriating reason:
NEW: Fraudsters stole $470 million last year from Americans who need help paying for food. Adopting the same microchip that credit cards have had for years would prevent most of the theft, but Congress won’t pay for it.
