Rugbyleague loving, trade unionists way to the left of Starmer but pragmatic. I realise that my own personal socialist government isn’t what everyone else wants.

29 August 1895. 6.30pm. The George Hotel, Huddersfield. The birth of the Northern Union. 'I say with Mark Twain's bold, bad boy that we glory in the sentence of outlawry pronounced on us, as freeing us from tyrannical bondage of the English [Rugby] Union'.

In my recent interviews I boasted about having claimed "zero personal expenses". Which is not surprising when you consider that there is no such thing as 'personal expenses' for MPs, so nobody has claimed any. But I have claimed over £150k in office expenses.

Starmer’s post-election speech gets worse with age. He said “incremental change won’t cut it” on defence, growth and Europe and has offered… exactly that.

When I heard that a refugee, who had settled in my post industrial northern town, said that this was the first time in their lift that they felt safe. I made me feel very proud. The question is how would you feel about this

If you're a white person and you think the Birtish state is waging war on white people, I have news for you. It isn't. It's waging war on working class people. It always has. But not just working class people, anyone who It considers a threat or a useful scapegoat.

The great irony of the Welsh success of Reform, run by millionaire ex-public schoolboys, is that one the greatest Welshmen, & founder of the NHS, warned of this “How can wealth persuade poverty to use its political freedom to keep wealth in power? Here lies whole art of Tory politics” Aneurin Bevan

Many sadly concluded we had to go through Brexit before people saw what a horrendous act of self-harm they had committed. I'm terrified the same thing will happen with #Reform - that people will vote for them without realising they've just screwed over their country, loved ones and themselves.

42 racehorses have died in the UK so far this year. 42 in less than 4 months. Yesterday a horse broke its back at Aintree. You can bet your life that if a single jockey died at the Grand National they would finally do something about it. #youbettheydie #grandnational

67 horses have died at the Aintree Festival since 2000. 17 after racing in the Grand National. This isn’t sport, it’s a death toll. We’re calling for a boycott. Don’t attend. Don’t bet. Switch off. It’s time to put horse welfare before profit.
