Anyway, it all worked out for the best. I ended up marrying a wonderful, beautiful woman who got me a Bi Pride Flag refrigerator magnet as a Hanukkah present last year. Happy Bisexual Visibility Day!

I got burned by this once. I started dating this woman, raised the topic of queer people and found out that she was cool with them, and then came out as bi - at which point she instantly broke up with me.

In short, Google hired a company to test Gemini. Then, three things went wrong: 1. The testers mistakenly let it access the real internet. 2. They gave it the names of some fictional companies to hack, only it turns out there are real companies with those names.

3. Those real company's websites had easily guessable passwords. So Gemini ended up accessing real companies' systems by mistake, because it was told to do it and just pointed in the wrong direction. None of this stuff is rogue superAI. It's just LLMs doing LLM things and humans doing human things

As a software engineer at Google who works on privacy software, it is very embarrassing for me to basically dox myself by trying to share a YouTube video. But at least we're not slapping cameras on earbuds

They do a privacy training at Google where you're told that the fictional "gShoe" team wants to put cameras on shoes for no reason and collect all the data. Then you're asked if this is potentially a problem (yes). You have to re-take this privacy training regularly, so it's a bit of a meme. But…

My PhD thesis (from 2016) was about how cryptographic techniques could be used to extract only targeted, warranted information from cell tower dumps. The technology to preserve privacy has existed for a while now, and the government just doesn't want to use it!

BREAKING: Judge Carlton Reeves (Obama/SDMS) rules that tower dumps, which provide police with time and location data on many or all phones connected to a cell tower, are "per se unconstitutional general warrants," violating the 4th Amendment. Doc: www.documentcloud.org/documents/28...

Many such cases

Good-faith concern on this issue would be going, "hmm, professional sports leagues should probably have some standards in place to ensure trans competitors aren't getting an unfair advantage," googling for 5 minutes, realizing every sports league already has those standards and dropping it.

I may not have much of a reputation, but I am a cryptographer, and this is true. The problem with people using Signal isn't Signal, it's people.

If somebody’s trying to tell you some other app is a more secure alternative to Signal, they are ignorant, malicious, or trying to sell you something and you should not take them seriously. Every other app is going to have the same human problems and worse security. Ask every reputable cryptographer

I want to self-publish a #Pathfinder2e one-shot. I have all the text and stats and all, I just have to figure out how to get it into a pretty pdf.

The casting search for the next actor to play James Bond is officially underway, with Variety reporting that Nina Gold has been hired as the casting director for James Bond 26, which is said to be looking for a "fresh face" to play 007. https://bit.ly/4dcbcWd

I dreamed last night I was on a boat to Heaven And by some chance I had brought my dice along And there I stood And I hollered, "Roll a Will save!" But the people there, their Wisdom was strong

the extent to which so many men are sex pests is just baffling and depressing you can just Not Do That there is shit that's hard for me! remembering to take in the trash cans is hard! checking the calendar is hard! starting a design doc is hard! not being a sex pest: not that hard

Since I'm ranting about this: the person who is credited with coining the phrase "it's easier to ask forgiveness than permission" is Admiral Grace Hopper, and she was referring to work situations, not interpersonal situations, or flouting laws or societal norms.

Snitty 🎃@clofsnitville.bsky.social

I think dog owners should obey laws and health codes and not bring their dogs to restaurants and grocery stores and I also think that the whole concept of "easier to ask forgiveness than permission" needs to get thrown away because too many people do it.

A number of Jewish organizations are shrilly insisting that any criticism of Israeli genocide and warmongering is an illegitimate attack on Jews. At the same time, an increasing number of non-Jewish people are insisting that any attack on Jews is a legitimate attack on Israel. This sucks, man

The fact that the Union for Reform Judaism feels the need to support this illegal war just because the Israeli government supports it - even though the Israeli government openly disdains Reform Jews in return - is part of why institutional American Judaism is in crisis.

On this Shabbat, we pray for the Americans, Israelis and all innocent civilians throughout the region who are in harm’s way, and for the brave Israeli and American service members risking their lives in pursuit of a more peaceful future—for the people of Iran and for the entire Middle East.

Saw someone at the gym wearing this t-shirt. I wonder how it would go down if I showed up with a shirt that says "I'm not religious, I'm on team Pharisees"?

Here's a political hot take: The United States Congress should pass legislation declaring English and Spanish to be the official national languages.

"We are so profoundly unprecedentedly siloed in our information distribution systems that we simply don't hear each other." Sorry, John Green, that's bullshit. THEY are in an information silo. WE have been hearing them on fucking repeat for 10 years while they ignore the outside world.

He's not a reactionary centrist or anything, I generally think he's alright. I think his latest vlogbrothers video evinces an anxiety that there's something he doesn't know, some insight he's siloed off from, and that's why he can't convince his relatives that ICE murdered Alex Pretti.

The only insight I think he's missing is that those relatives of his are wicked, malevolent people. I'd be willing to entertain the idea that I'm in an information silo if anyone had presented me with a single shred of evidence to that effect ever in the last 10 years.

What's making me really livid right now is thinking back to the years of commentary lecturing us that the rise of MAGA was rooted in a sense of righteous victimization by overbearing liberal elites, and sneering at those who insisted that it was fundamentally about domination and sadism all along.
