Now is the time to care about everyone, not “once we win” The time to care about everyone is always always always now

It is scary to be a teacher. It is scary to have a spouse who is a teacher. It is scary to have a child in school. It is a giant assault to the nervous system to have every member of your family in schools. I love my job. I just maybe don't want to do it *here*.

I love having friends over. I hate the aftermath left in my kid's playroom. She leaves it a bit of a mess sometimes, but it is controlled chaos. She spent days cleaning things up. Sorted Lego sets into individual bins. Disassembled her marble run and sorted marbles into their correct tins.

Today has left us with broken marble run pieces. Missing marbles. Her favourite Lego figures have been torn apart and we can't find the pieces (RIP Anna of Arendelle.) Broken flashlight. Ripped Lego build guides. Mixed up sets. Play kitchen tools and food everywhere. It's a mess.

She's sitting in the middle of it all, overwhelmed and with no idea where to start. With a bruise on her nose where she got backed by a box a friend threw at her. It's like a hangover in primary school form.

Not proud of it, but we ordered Maccas when we were in Japan. (Look, YOU deal with a hungry six year old when the only open restaurants are izakaya.) It was... Pretty good, honestly! I had the ebikatsu burger & it was delicious. I didn't feel awful afterwards. It was... Yeah, good! Compared to...

The Maccas we ordered tonight back in the US. Kiddo couldn't get a cheeseburger in her happy meal (unhappy!), the fries had zero seasoning, and I still feel completely awful three hours after I ate it. It was terrible. Why is there such a stark difference??

Dolly Parton on funding education and childhood literacy programs: My daddy was the smartest man I have ever known, but I knew his inability to read probably kept him from seeing all of his dreams come true. Inspiring kids to love to read became my mission.

Some people are so universally beloved that I think we shouldn’t be told when they die. Let us figure it out eventually but never receive confirmation. We should always be able to idly speculate that somehow there’s a chance they *could* still be alive

I found Nirvana's MTV Unplugged album yesterday, and haven't listened to it in ages. My Geriatric Millennial ass gave it a listen today, and a) still great as a whole b) Where Did You Sleep Last Night still gives me goosebumps. It is beautiful and raw and just an amazing piece of music.

Somewhat encouraged that our pediatrician yesterday answered my question of whether anything is going to change with kiddo getting vaccines with: "Pfft, no! Idiots."

Somehow Donald Trump turned a bad day for U.S. soccer into one of the most embarrassing days in the history of U.S. sports, and crushed the good vibes around a great tournament. Nice work, asshole.

I answered a question on social media about sumo tickets. And offered to provide more info via DM. The person took me up in it. And that's how I ended up in an hour long chat with a stranger from Hobart, whose Dad is also from my hometown. Just... a random connection with a stranger. Lovely.

I'm now fully invested in F1 racing, and need to choose a favourite driver. Piastri is my Aussie guy. Hamilton is flashy. Antonelli is a wunderkind. But George Russell has *insanely* pretty eyes, my word.

Oof. Asian hubby just applied for his ETA to Australia. The application requires a live photo taken on the app. And included, for him, the *Asian guy*, "open eyes more". ETA granted, all is good. But ouch...

Our neighbours are... fine. Definitely not great. And definitely not remotely considerate of their neighbourhood. (I also have piping hot tea on them.) Their lights on their house are insane. And I hate to be that person, but I am debating filing a complaint. Because FFS...

For science, I decided to buy a merino wool shirt for summer and travel. It is not a super warm day today. But so far it has been delightfully comfortable, not at all itchy, not at all hot to wear, and it fits nicely. $40 for a shirt is a bit above budget, but I might have to buy another one.

That moment of confusion and then panic when you get an order update and shipping confirmation from an address you don't recognize ordering anything from. Then the moment of relief and joy when you remember it's the Documentary Now book and it will probably arrive for Father's Day.

For it to be a good school year, as a teacher, you'd ideally have two out of these three: - classroom sailing (mostly) smoothly - supportive, or at least chill, parents - a cohesive team to work with If one isn't going well, the other two can get you through. Me? Currently all three are on fire.

The hunt for a new job is underway in earnest. If you could spare some good luck and positive vibes, please and thank you, that would be much appreciated.

Help, please. PDPs are due tomorrow. Mine are submitted. I already make newsletters, flyers, sit in meetings then report back... I truly do not want to stay late to meet the almost inevitable request for help with the other teachers' PDPs. How do I politely say "figure it out yourself..."?

It's the great time post-dentist when you realize your teeth are shit, your endocrine system is shit, your reproductive system is shit, but you have things to do and family to entertain for the next few weeks, so you'd better put that smiling face on and pretend it is ALL FINE.

Thoughts while watching a high school production of Matilda in New Jersey... Oh... this kid went for an "English" accent, huh? Interesting choice. Oh... Ohhhhh. The whole cast is doing English accents. Oh. Oh my. [Teeth gnashing] FFS SAY TO-MAH-TO! COMMIT TO THE BIT! It was... Something.

My husband (English teacher) hates puns. (I KNOW!) And yet! When he comes home, he sings a Who parody to/for our cats. "We don't have food again..."

Grandpa: boilermaker at a sugar mill, volunteered as a surf lifesaver, dabbled (quite successfully at his club and local level) in lawn bowls. Grandad: sugar cane farmer, avid fisherman (in the river that bordered the farm, and had barramundi), and a Freemason.

Whether or not you’re running for Congress and trying to seem rugged (and you probably should run, because, look who’s out there) what did your grandpas do for a living?

It is the wee one's first year in Chinese school. And I jumped way out of my comfort zone and joined the all-parent volunteer Dragon Dance group. Today we performed for the Lunar New Year celebration. It was incredibly fun, and I am now exhausted.

Presenting: my fave annual lesson, always on a post-snow delayed opening day. It incorporates four senses to observe snow, descriptive language, sensory play, exploration of changes in matter, reasoning, prediction, and mixing primary colors. I'm very proud of it. 🥹 #EduSky #PreK
