figured I'd listen to Christy Clark make the case for the new Conservative government's fiscal policy since there's a huge and widening deficit, they're promising tax cuts, and they say they won't cut healthcare apparently the fix is just to chant "Laffer curve" until you start to feel better

Call me a child or a rube but I think trying to time a snap election to catch your opponents with their pants down was a poor expression of democratic ideals and deserved to fail. (Although I wish that it hadn't! The consequences are going to be real and they're going to be bad.)

Election night horse race journalism continues to be total garbage that I can't help but watch. There have been literally two votes reported in a riding (aside: how???) and you have the fucking hubris to colour it literally any colour? This is a really offensive, totally normal showing from CBC.

[norman rockwell guy] i don't think clearing some land to build things is often a crime against humanity or indeed against all of creation, even when the result is aesthetically inferior environmentalist rhetoric is poisoned by a deep well of self-hatred

Thank you Iona, Jarrett, Frances, and Caitlin. You are all some of the most experienced, hardworking people in the city, and you ran a campaign that was authentic, rooted in the belief that City Hall can be more. Your voices and your ideas have made this party, and this election, better.

If you ever want to buy a physical manifestation of the "does he know?" meme, you'll walk past a lot of tourist shops selling "I ♥️ BJ" shirts in, uh, BeiJing. (I'm certain they know.)

one very significant difference between junior and senior devs is that the problem for seniors is pessimism and too-low ambition for what the tools can accomplish based on a career of saying ”no, that’s too much work”

On the train from Xi'an to Shanghai last night, we could see farmers burning maize stalks in their fields to prepare to plant wheat; the smoke smell in the train was very strong. This is apparently both illegal—the province fines villages if they light up fire-detection satellites—and ubiquitous.

I expected problems accessing Western social media from China but this (while using a US-based eSIM) was unexpected. And GPS doesn't work on the bullet trains!

Used Alipay to order milk tea from a stall in a high-speed rail station our train to Xi'an was transiting. It came to our seats a few minutes after the stop. Would have been a real five star experience if only we had more customization options for the teas 🥺

the actual practice of biological and medical research has a way of breeding a radical epistemic humility

Hélianthe@helianthe.net

much respect for Professor Tao, but there are so so so many medical therapies that work without anyone really understanding how or why they work one of the great things about science is that we can use empirical knowledge in practice far ahead of when theoretical frameworks catch up to refine it

Beijing highlight: the Liangmahe is a river with a nice reclaimed green bank and a pedestrian path. Along one section, a bunch of guys were standing around with boats they'd inflated on the spot, offering rentals. Lots of young people splashing around amid bored looking security guards.

i'm not watching this game, but i do live next to the stadium, and, usually, hearing the Canucks goal horn this many times would have implied a more victorious milieu

this really is impeachable for any president, but really grotesque coming from a regime that cut life-saving development aid because they said it was not efficient

Here's a $20 million order, paid for by CBP's Office of Public Affairs, awarded to LMD Agency for a national media campaign starting on Sept. 20. The first pro-Trump ad aired on Sept. 23. www.usaspending.gov/award/CONT_A...

the ceremonial aspects of the job interview assess the performance of social class, which is more important for some roles than others

Kai Ryssdal@kairyssdal.bsky.social

I’m sorry, but if you bring an iced coffee - or any damn beverage at all - to a job interview, you’re disqualified. It’s not hard, people.
