"After reviewing the relevant law, the Court ruled that the couple is taxed on $64,750, and they can't deduct any of the corresponding attorney fees (Eiler, 167 TC No. 3)." - Kiplinger Tax Letter This couple sued the credit companies, WON, and lost money on the win.

"After attorney fees and other expenses, the couple received only about $5,000, which they included as income on their tax return. IRS claimed that the full $64,750 which was reported on Forms 1099-Misc filed by the defendants, is taxable to them."

..... ๐Ÿ˜ถ ๐Ÿ˜ฑ OH MY GOD IT'S A TAX DEDUCTIBLE BUSINESS EXPENSE

Alexandra Rowland@alexandrarowland.bsky.social

MYTH: I'd have to make my own book cover. REALITY: Sure, you can if you want to. But commissioning a book cover is not as expensive as you think, and it's a tax-deductible business expense.

Apologies for being quiet lately. I have been affected by a layoff and, after 9 years working at Aether Studios making characters for Rivals of Aether, Dungeons of Aether and Rivals of Aether 2, I will be out of a job starting May 1st. If you need a concept artist or character designer, hit me up.

Remember: set aside 20% of your monthly income aside for taxes! Ideally, you'll be putting this monthly reserve aside at www.irs.gov/payments/onl... - the IRS Individual Account! By doing so, you'll also avoid the failure to pay estimated taxes penalty. Which isn't a lot, but it's not nothing!

Just as a heads up; I haven't been in my office this week because, well One of my neighbors got a new job. And I guess that new job starts at like 5 in the morning, because they've been getting picked up at 4:30. By someone hooking their car INSTEAD OF A GODDAMN CELL PHONE

So I haven't actually slept well enough to work on taxes (or even D&D ;w; ) in a week. And of course, the police won't do anything unless it's an active noise violation.

I need these fucking fascists to get the FUCK out of my country. God does not love them. Jesus weeps for those they've harmed. I will not pray for them, these bastards have no soul to save. My grandfather shot fascists. He fought in a war to get rid of fascists. And now they're on his soil.

On the phone for an hour to resolve a client's tax issue with the IRS. I finally get an IRS agent. "Oh yeah, that was resolved back in October; a week after we issued the notice. We didn't send a follow-up notice because the balance was too small."

I'm aware of a post currently circulating about my firm. I'm not going to deny the claims made in the post, but I can't confirm them either. I have not been made aware of any of the issues claimed by the clients. This is not a place for excuses, so I will not offer any.

I will acknowledge that the attempted merger in 2021 may have complicated communication channels. The fact that I wasn't given an opportunity to resolve any issues, either by communicating with the IRS or correcting the return, does not mean clients were not harmed.

Tax Clients, take note! The IRS has, historically, used the postmark date to determine the date of paper filings. www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc... Now that the USPS is changing the postmark date to the date of processing, a tax document mailed *the day that it's due* will no longer be filed on time.

For those of us who pay quarterly taxes or any other payment by December 31, this unheralded change in postal policy can bite you in the butt. This could have other unforeseen consequences (e.g., mail-in balloting), but for now, this is more timely.

This means that if you are paper filing returns, you need to have it in the mail THREE DAYS before April 15th!! This also applies to responses to letters from the IRS. Make sure you don't get bit with a late filing penalty!!

Nothing summarizes how much I love doing taxes, than submitting my 2024 paperwork for the extension I paid in April of 2025, on the day its due (today). I'm incredibly grateful for @taxbadger.com. They've carried me since 2020 & have been a highly recommended LIFE SAVER. Just keep good records!

IMPORTANT NEWS As of October 17th, individuals will no longer be able to create new EFTPS accounts. Individuals are being encouraged to enroll in IRS Online Accounts. In 2026, all individuals will be required to transition away from EFTPS.

I am quite surprised that this hasn't picked up more traction!! 20% off means loading a gift card for yourself for $500 (for example) only costs you $400, but you still get $500 to spend. Nevertheless, once it's gone Nov 1st, it won't come back under any exception!

This is the biggest deal of the year ๐Ÿ’ฏ and a fantastic way to help us reach our campaign goal! Haven't heard yet? โ†’ GoGetFunding.com/WildePrints #wildeprints #furry #furryfandom #nsfw #vinylstickers #stickers #prints #posters #help-us-help-you

These are all ideals that Charlie Kirk has actively fought against. The nation he wanted to build would not be my land, it would not be your land. He fought to take away our freedoms. He fought against opportunity. He wanted to turn away the tired, the poor, the huddled masses.

He fought to divide this country. He preached against the teachings of God. He did not want liberty and justice for anyone that didnโ€™t agree with him. Charlie Kirk is no hero. He is a traitor to America.

We were the leaders of the world! Lady Liberty welcomed everyone. She told the world, โ€œGive me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses.โ€ We were one nation, under God, indivisible. With liberty and justice for all. A nation that everyone could be proud of, that everyone wanted to live in.

Currently on vacation in Seattle, but when I get back to my office, I'm going to begin looking into payment options that aren't PayPal. I need a system my clients can use, and PayPal is proving that they aren't an option.

Interrupting my vacation to bring you the Tax Badger's notes on the Big Beautiful Bill. These are only the provisions that will affect you on a tax basis; there are additional provisions that affect millions of people, but these are beyond my official purview as an accounting firm.

Ability to deduct up to $10,000 of interest on new auto loans. Any loan taken out after Dec 31 2024 qualifies. State and Local Tax (SALT) are expanded from $10,000 to $40,000. As SALT makes up the majority of the average taxpayer's itemized deduction, that's alot.

Business taxes: Research and equipment expenses may now be claimed at 100% rather than being amortized. Many of the Green tax credits passed in 2022 are revoked. Electric vehicles, solar panels, home EV charging equipment, among them.

The TCJA Tax Brackets and rates are permanent. 10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35%, and 37%. As far as I can tell, the actual bracket numbers remain adjusted to inflation. Seniors making under $75,000 will see an additional $6,000 deduction, from $1,600 to $7,600.

No taxes on tips, up to $25,000, or overtime pay, up to $12,500. There's a mild increase to the Child Tax Credit, from $2,000 to $2,200. The refundable portion ($1,700) remains unchanged. Charitable contributions return as a non-itemized deduction, up to $1,000 single/$2,000 joint.

This is your regular reminder: The reason that your taxes feel so much higher when you're self-employed is because there are taxes (15%, Social Security and Medicare) held out of your paycheck in traditional employment (i.e. Walmart). But you are your own employer. That means holding FICA taxes!

(Now, super technically, yes you are paying 7.5% more in FICA than if you were a traditional employee; that's because the employer pays 7.5% of FICA, and the employee pays 7.5%. When you're self-employed, you're both halves of that FICA scale, hence why it's 15%)

But you're not paying different taxes. You're paying the same taxes! Just that you're paying them *yourself* - there's no Walmart or McDonalds or Goldman Sachs that is holding these taxes for you.

FICA (Social Security and Medicare) have no floor - they're due on every dollar you earn. However, in traditional employment, you never have to worry about them, because you never get to touch that money. It's taken out of your paycheck before you get it - by your employer!

They are then responsible for sending the FICA taxes they held on your behalf to the IRS every quarter. This is also true of self employment! That's what quarterly estimates are for. However, because you are your own employer, YOU become responsible for these steps.

I am home from vacation! Unfortunately, that was an 8 hour drive with no audio books (I tried to find one but the one I picked didn't grab me so I turned it off), so I'm taking an extra day to recover Will get to emails tomorrow!
