Tax Clients, take note! The IRS has, historically, used the postmark date to determine the date of paper filings. www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc... Now that the USPS is changing the postmark date to the date of processing, a tax document mailed *the day that it's due* will no longer be filed on time.

For those of us who pay quarterly taxes or any other payment by December 31, this unheralded change in postal policy can bite you in the butt. This could have other unforeseen consequences (e.g., mail-in balloting), but for now, this is more timely.

There wasn’t any guarantee that something dropped in a blue box would get postmarked the same day. It usually was, but depending on that for a legally recognized date mark was a bad idea. If you need/needed a postmark of right now, take it to the counter. As far as I know, that hasn’t changed.

This means that if you are paper filing returns, you need to have it in the mail THREE DAYS before April 15th!! This also applies to responses to letters from the IRS. Make sure you don't get bit with a late filing penalty!!
