Hi! My name is Ben and I write music and make games. I've released over 100 songs into the public domain for #IndieDev All my music is ContentID-free and can be used in any project! All I ask is that my name be credited somewhere if possible <3 Lots of links to stuff are in the replies below. ⬇️

I want to thank everyone who has helped support the book in the first few days of release! It's been a long time coming and I'm so glad that it's finally out there <3 I am starting work on the audiobook recording and am talking with printers on a short run physical version too!

I wrote a book! This condenses 10 years (and over 450 songs) of knowledge down into about an hour's read. It focuses on how to be creative under self-imposed pressure and growing as an artist. I'm ridiculously proud of this and I hope you check it out 🥰 ben-burnes.gumroad.com/l/write-a-so...

I am very new at the concept of book releases, so I'm not really sure how to market something like this. That being said, if you know (or listen to) a podcast that you think this would be a cool topic, let me know! Same with blogs or other news/journalistic sites :D

I wrote a book. It's coming out next Friday. This has been a project on my mind for over 5 years and I'm nervous to share the completed work.

Forcing myself to get out there and actually capture a piece of the place I was gives it so much more meaning to me, personally. I think that comes through in the music itself too. Especially these days where it's hard to tell if something was generated by a machine. I want the process to be real.

Anyway, listen to the album if you can. I feel it's some of the most refreshing music I've made in a long time. Next time I go on a trip, I'm definitely bringing my gear with me again.

This album was created by going to a place, recording audio and taking pictures, and then making music from those recordings based on the vibes and feelings I had while there. It was wildly refreshing. I think this is something that I want to do a lot more of in the future.

One of the defining ways we can make music is through capturing a moment. As much as I like that I have recorded samples of basically everything I ever wanted, I feel like it's painted me into a corner creatively because it's so easy to just pull from the library I made years ago.

Hey everyone! Don't forget that tomorrow is April 1st; a vestigial holiday in the Modern Internet where people used to consume misinformation for fun.

Thinking about this yesterday. A broken record, but capitalism is the original brain rot. It *fundamentally* turns interactions into something adversarial: how much value can I extract from this interaction while protecting my assets. Joy comes from sharing, joy comes from helping others grow.

nickelbolt@nickelbolt.bsky.social

I'm thinking a lot about joy as an act of resistance (and not just the exceptional Idles album.) Have you ever once seen anyone in the administration genuinely smile? Or any billionaire tech bro? They're miserable people who hate joy and want everyone to be as miserable as they are.

Continuing work on this; a lot of improvements. Right now toying with the idea of ambient light fading over time. The thought being when you level up you "spend" your light for upgrades. No more light means boss time! Trying hard to not over-scope this!

One thing that isn't conveyed very well in the video is that this is rendered at 320x180 and then upscaled to fit the screen, so the actual gameplay is crisp as heck.

A little thing that's cooking called Darkness Sleeps. Twin stick style game where the darkness is your biggest enemy. Not sure if this is going to be an arcade style score attack or a more longer form Vampire Survivors roguelite. I'll probably srart with the former and see how it goes.

This was originally a Unity game back in 2023, but I've been rebuilding it in Godot. Took a bit of noodling, but I'm pleased with how it came together over the past few days. I'm trying to build a "proper" game this time and not rely on hasty jam code to hack things together. Going OK so far!

My public domain music has contributed to 300 projects on itch (that I know about)! I keep a playlist of every game people share with me if you wanted to give some a peek :) itch.io/c/1406541/ga... Also, if you need free music for your project, check it out ⬇️

First, I have released tons of music into the public domain for #GameDev and other projects. I treat this like a sketchbook. Attribution isn't required, but always appreciated. Preview and download all the songs here: tallbeard.itch.io/music-loop-b... But where can you listen to my albums? ⬇️

This has been an idea lodged in my brain for the past 2 years. Finally cleaned up my shed enough to where I could actually make it. Still a rough draft, but I kinda really love it :D Video alt: A section of branch plugged into the wall. When turned on, it illuminates the selenite chunk on top.

Pleased with how this is coming together! When you are too hot, you get fire icons and too cold shows the hitbox in blue. Target values slowly drift over time so you'll never be perfectly comfortable. Starting to feel like a real game! After some tweaks, I can add more mechanics #GameDev #Godot

Video alt text: Black and white image of person lying in bed. Fire icons come out from under the blanket and the player drags the edges of the blanket around exposing the person underneath. If too much is exposed, areas turn blue indicating they are cold.

One thing I really struggle with is a way to share my music on social media. No place really allows you to drop an MP3 file in a post and making an empty video is boring. Anyway, here's a little loop I made last night that's got me vibing.

Also, my wife and I have five cats. So there are plenty of pictures to go around there too. I took a hiatus from social media starting a year ago. It's honestly weird to be posting again, but I'm looking forward to checking out new art and making new friends. 🥰
