Trying a baguette recipe. I’ve made more bread than I can count, but usually the same way: Mix dough, knead the crap out of it, proof, form, wait for it to rise to fill form, bake. The baguette recipe starts with a really gooey dough that you don‘t knead at all.

Instead of kneading, the dough is just folded every 45 minutes or so for half a day, then folded several times to become long, with final proof in a couche. I’m only making one today, so I’m using a flour encrusted tea towel in a piece of PVC pipe I cut in half.

This is the latest in the line of Freebee Microbee compatibles. I've broken both my "no PLDs" and "no SMD" rules to make a Microbee compatible that can do a full-colour 320x264 display, rather than the usual 2-colours-per character that Microbee Premium did.

I've done the board in KiCad, as usual. It's getting pretty dense do I had to resort to using some PALs (still period correct for mid eighties) and I also used MELF resistors and diodes, and 1206 chip resistors, which are again period correct. Alas I had to go to 6 layers to route it.

As with my previous incarnations of Freebee, it's designed for ease of manufacture by hand, with generous pads and (mostly) through-hole.

If I combine that as four x 4 bit colour fields, that gives me 4 pixels with individually definable 4 bit colour in the time where we normally output 8 bits of character info. Sure that means we need to halve the horizontal resolution, but we still get a respectable 320 x 264 display.

I've allowed normal per-character colour as well, and even combined them using an attribute bit, so the same display can have characters (80 characters per row) plus graphics characters at half resolution with fully definable colours. It'll make writing games like pacman really easy.

It's got some cool specs for an 8-bit machine - full Microbee compatibility, RTC, 512K RAM, 512K ROM, Z180 CPU at up to 27MHz with fast serial I/O. Plus of course the advanced graphics. I worked out that I could combine the 8 bit colour fetch plus the 8 bit character fetch to give 16 bits of data.

Mounted the driver board on the back of my old 5k iMac display. This thing drives the LCD in full glorious 5k, complete with backlight from thunderbolt. It’s even got a DAC, which I’ve connected up to my speakers, so no need to plug into the headphone socket on my mini. Kapton tape FTW.

I made a cable up to connect the power supply AC input to the original IEC inlet on the display, to keep things neat.

My ex’s dog always wanted to join in.

The combination of an M6 Mac mini with maxed out RAM, 5k converted iMac monitor, and @kicad.org version 9 is making maze game incredibly enjoyable. This thing is fast. Really fast. And I can see soooo much!

Pads with diverse shapes on layers is broken in #Kicad10. I've developed a pad stack for DIP parts that allows good solderability on outer layers with an oval (bishop graphics) pad, and smaller round pads on inner layers for more routing room. No worky on Kicad 10. Bummer! 9 on left, 10 on right.

Yay! I’ve upgraded my 2017 5k iMac to mountain lion. All it took was installation of an M6 “helper” Mac mini, plus a display driver board. Now I’ve got all the compute power of the mini, plus my awesome 5k monitor.

Took Max for a 15km walk today, including being passed by a whole flock of sheeps who were being mustered. Farmer commented on how good Max was with the sheeps. He thought they were awesome, and asked where to apply for the job. Still pulling hard after 14km, so we ran home most of the last bit.

Just did a very thorough molestadog session to check for grass seeds and check the condition of his pads. He’s absolutely fine, though I did brush out some nasty seeds. I wonder how @iknowthezarbi.bsky.social would do with Max if I fell off the perch. Im the only one he’ll let do molestadog.

Helen Haines is the very best of people. She's respected and loved by every person in our Parliament. Those of us lucky enough to know her are praying for Helen and her family, team and community tonight.

Getting the bike in a fit state to ride. My choice of rubber is: Nice Michelin pro3 race HPs in a 20mm width. Even nicer Veloflex Masters in a 23mm width (I’ve already got a set mounted). Slow as a wet week Michelin Carbons in a 25mm width (I used to commute on these).

Go to your camera roll and search “boat” and post one that you like

I got our local butcher to cut the shanks in half for tonight’s scotch broth. The stand mixer is for the bread. Fuck I love holidays.

Fucking loving holidays so far. I’ve pressure cleaned the house, gotten my shiny new Mac mini going, ploughed my paddock (aka played with tractor) and plucked more monster rocks, pulled out the imitation pear that’s in the way of my future vineyard, and done a couple of awesome dog walks with Max.

We’re working to find the cause of today’s power outage, which is apparently different to the cause of the one two days ago, or the fucking twelve so far this year.

Shiny new M6 Mac mini shows up to replace my 2017 iMac. This thing is a beast. After playing for a bit, we have a blackout (very common here) and my speakers die. Fearing for the Mac, I try with my old HD595 cans, and only one channel works. Next I try my PXC450s. Nothing. Works with my momentum 2s.

Also, this new Mac mini is way too small to put my ancient monitor on, so I’ve gotta use a 2014 one as a monitor stand. I’ve got a board on its way that will allow me to gut the iMac to use the screen on the mini.

Turns out the PXC cans need the bypass switch switched, and I’ve got a dead left side in the 595s. The power supply on my preamp died from the blackout. Yes, I have way too many nice headphones. I used to fly a lot in extremely loud aircraft.
