Look, there are a billion reasons to loathe this guy and I generally try avoid needlessly libposting on here, but... last month, my dad died in a VA hospice wing from a combo of end-stage Parkinson's and prostate cancer. He was at Camp Lejeune for years. Come on man. What the fuck are we doing.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Trump on Camp Lejeune settlements: "If the Republicans don't do well, I'd say maybe they won't get their money"

Not for nothing but I personally spent a good chunk of time over the course of the summer during my dad's decline obtaining medical records and corresponding with the legal office handling his case. Truly ghoulish shit from Trump, though I can't say I'd expect anything less from him at this point.

Wild timing, I was JUST discussing this in therapy (lol) literally an hour ago. I try to stay away from algorithms as best as I can, but that’s mostly because since the 90s, I’ve relied heavily on music reviews, music criticism, and college radio. Choices and opinions from real people.

On a realistic note I’ve discovered probably five times as much new music I genuinely love through semi-regular KEXP listenership (playlists by DJs) than I’ve gotten from Apple Music/Spotify recommendations over the past three years since I’ve lived in Seattle. I mostly tune out “you might like” now

especially when it’s something you otherwise wouldn’t have sought out on your own, at least without that guidance — that discovery can be SO satisfying. And it can take you down fascinating paths.

Anyway, shout out to WERS and WJUL in the 90s, music reviews in Transworld Skateboarding, wild mixtapes from my friend Kris in the aughts, the Dissolve (RIP), and lately the Drifter’s Sympathy podcast

This is a real double-edged sword, as it is partially fueled by what I now know is OCD. In that respect, I’m sure I’ve listened to countless wasted hours of music that wasn’t very good. But when you discover something that resonates with you —

Drinking and chatting with friends at a bar way back when and was rightfully roasted after pronouncing “amalgam” as if it rhymed with “CAMEL-GRAM”

Merriam-Webster@merriam-webster.com

macabre = “muh-KAHB” Worcestershire = “WOOSS-ter-sheer” omnipotent = “ahm-NI-puh-tunt” reticent = “RET-uh-sunt” epitome = “ih-PIT-uh-mee” myriad = "MEER-ee-ud" Never make fun of someone if they mispronounce a word. It means they learned it by reading.

@pastduepodcast.com just as a quick heads up, today’s episode with Nato Green seems to have been cut off partway through! (I was really enjoying and getting a ton out of this episode, but it cuts out abruptly around the 43 minute mark.)

“Artificial intelligence labs are in a new arms race to buy up millions of rare books, slicing them open, scanning the pages and pulping the remains — sparking concerns that the last remaining copies of out-of-print texts are being destroyed on an industrial scale.”

say what you will about AI, always-on voice recording and auto dictation has been a game changer for my workflows. Save post and close app. Yeah Footlong meatball sub on white. No veggies. Don't toast it. Ranch and barbecue sauce. Yeah, ranch and bargecue sauce. More. More. Little more please

RIP Lou Koller. 17-year-old me spent a lot of time learning songs from Built To Last, and that influence still holds to this day —even if I’m not playing anything that could be remotely described as hardcore. Also proud to have an SOIA t-shirt that is technically old enough to rent a car.

Did you hear about the clown college lion attack? He went straight for the juggler. Eleven clowns were lost, most in a single vehicle accident, fleeing the scene. Next year's class will have some big shoes to fill.

Part of Spielberg’s genius is basically saying “I’m gonna make three of cinema’s biggest freaks the leads of my family friendly big budget dinosaur movie and you’re gonna love it.”

BLUESKY BATMAN: Sorry if I'm not in the mood for "jokes" while SCOTUS shreds our constitutional rights

Providence definitely skews more Boston sports fandom vs New York, but even so, there’s a non-zero chance I will meet a puppy named Brunson at some point within the next 18 months
