New paper by Harshath Amal @harshath.bsky.social shows how TGF-β signaling controls epithelial permeability by regulating actomyosin contractility and adhesion. Surprisingly, elevated adhesion can maintain barrier integrity independently of contractility

Our latest paper is out in @embojournal.org! Chromatin compaction is a hallmark of apoptosis, but the mechanism & function of this process was unclear. We show apoptotic compaction is required to prevent fragmented DNA from spreading beyond the dying cell, and is driven by histone deacetylation.
How does DNA remain confined to dying cells despite its fragmentation?
@mfdspicer.bsky.social@rcollepardo.bsky.social@gerlichlab.bsky.social et al show histone deacetylation compacts apoptotic chromatin, preventing it from entering apoptotic extracellular vesicles

This is a truly startling paper. It shows that mRNA can perform regulatory functions *in addition to* its role in encoding a protein. In other words, the distinction between protein-coding RNA and noncoding regulatory RNA is fuzzy. /1

Primary and metastatic colorectal tumor cells share a common origin, but do they share the same molecular vulnerabilities?
Surprisingly, primary cells depend far more on #PCF11 and #CPSF73, two key pre-mRNA 3' end processing/termination factors.

Development is happy to be a @reviewcommons.org affiliate journal, aiming to reduce reviewer burden and speed up publishing for authors.
Read the articles we've published via Review Commons here: journals.biologists.com/dev/collecti...
And find out more about the platform:
We spoke with four researchers who have repeatedly chosen Review Commons as a preprint #PeerReview platform for their own work. 🧪

Two steps in gene expression that should move together… don’t. In our new paper we show that pre-mRNA cleavage and RNA polymerase II (RNAPII) termination shift in opposite directions – with a surprising link to gene expression and cancer cell vulnerability. Read more here: tinyurl.com/3pkeuctp

Very proud of this study!
Two fundamental processes in gene expression turn out less tightly connected than thought. And their relationship may help explain some surprising vulnerabilities of cancer cells.
A big thank you to Agata and Deepshika for years of hard work, and kudos to all collaborators!

Also grateful to @embojournal.org and Research Commons for a professional and smooth experience, and the anonymous reviewers for insightful comments and constructive criticism that helped us to improve our manuscript!

How do cells build functional protrusions during stress? In our @natcomms.nature.com paper, we uncover a CBX3-dependent chromatin-to-protrusion mRNA transport pathway that organizes a local "mini-cytoplasm" to drive cell activation, migration and invasion. Here's the story 🧵👇 doi.org/10.1038/s414...
There is still time to apply for the EMBL International PhD Programme! 📢

Studying gene ends is becoming even more fascinating! Curious why? Read our News & Views "Transcriptional readthrough progresses from incidental byproduct to therapeutic opportunity" inspired by the recent publication by Podszywałow-Bartnicka and @karlaneugebauer.bsky.social@natsmb.nature.com
There is more to transcriptional readthrough than meets the eye, and it could even provide a therapeutic opportunity in cancer. Check out our new perspective, inspired by recent work from Neugebauer and Grzechnik labs! #RNABiology#RNASky#Epigenetics

“Killer” is too kind. Musk is a mass murderer. He’s disrupting democracies around the world. Not to mention the “mechahitler” white-supremacist misogyny machine of Grok & X.
I witnessed firsthand the cruel, ignorant, wasteful destruction at NASA at the hands of DOGE.
