Great -- the latest trend is for phishing emails to look like Git notifications. This one came in through a single-use email address that I use only for my @ticketmaster.com login. So thanks for spreading my email address around, Ticketmaster.

Garrett Graff quotes Nicholas Grossman: “Evidence keeps accumulating that LLMs are a powerfully useful technology for people who already know what they're talking about, and a dangerous outsourcing of cognitive function for people who don't. Exactly. I’ve heard both parts from my colleagues.

Wondering why data centers are as unpopular as nuclear waste? It's not the data centers. The problem is both more obvious and more fundamental: The daily lived experience of the AI boom sucks. www.doomsdayscenario.co/p/ai-is-maki...

Since I did do my PhD in cyanobacteria growth and treatment optimization modeling AND work in the water treatment industry, I’m gonna share my theory as to what’s happening here and how to fix it. People are focusing on the painted bottom of the pool increasing residual heat, and while that 1/19

RIP Mark Rothko. You would have loved how the hydrogen peroxide bleach is only turning the Reflecting Pool blue around the perimeter

I took me a week before I was ready to try to write this one. Remembering Cleve Moler (1936-2026) Cleve Moler, creator of MATLAB and co-founder of MathWorks, hero to many engineers and scientists, was a world champion story teller. #cleve #matlab #mathworks steveeddins.com/blog/matlab/...

It's a sad day at MathWorks with the news that Cleve Moler, creator of #MATLAB and cofounder of #MathWorks, has passed away. We will miss you dearly, Cleve!

I just seem to be in a thinly populated intergalactic dust cloud.

Zooming right in, you can see that I am part of a cluster called 'HPC and Supercomputing professionals'. Zooming out, it's fun to see what communities are clustered near us such as 'Ceramic artists and potters'

A reminder to the news media: “conflicting accounts” is what you say BEFORE the incontrovertible video evidence appears. After that, your job is to ask why one side is lying, not to repeat the lie and pretend no one knows the truth.

You have to read this. Firsthand affidavit from one of the women who was there and recording the video. She talks about how Alex Pretti was directing traffic when she arrived. She watched him be killed in front of her. She's afraid to go home, worried she'll be arrested.

JUST IN: Lawyers file declaration in federal court from first-hand witness to immigration agents' shooting of a US citizen onlookers today. Minneapolis Mayor Frey said details would be used to bolster case for ousting ICE from city. Doc: www.documentcloud.org/documents/26...

Imagine this in a trial. Devastating first-hand witness to Alex Pretti's killing Declaration filed in federal court: "I don't know why they shot him. He was only helping. I was five feet from him and they just shot him."

Pam Bondi just sent a letter to Minnesota officials saying ICE will leave if the state turns over its voter database to Trump. Guess what? This has never been about safety or immigration. It’s a pretext for Trump to take over elections in swing states.

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

A bunch of US government accounts joined Bluesky last night, just before the No Kings rallies today. On Twitter, these accounts are known for using quote posts to direct their MAGA followers to harass people online. Use this list to block them all. Do not engage. Use “detach quote” if needed.

The four Nazgûl pursuing Gandalf forsake the chase and turn back south. Three ride for the Last Bridge to prevent the Ring from crossing it. The land is growing rocky, so Gandalf sends Shadowfax back to Rohan. The wizard sets out on an eleven-day hike through the Ettenmoors.

I read about this and had to try it myself. This is a screenshot of my phone after running the search “oreo spelled backwards” directly on Google. Check out the “AI” response.

When I was little, the U.S. military came to our home at gunpoint and took me and my family away. We were imprisoned for years in barbed wire camps simply because we were Japanese American. I have spent my life telling that story, hoping it would never be repeated.

I expect that consumer-facing AI programs will continue to improve and they may become much more useful tools for everyday life in the future. But I think it was a disastrous mistake that today’s models were taught to be convincing before they were taught to be right.
