'All peasants, being themselves utterly lacking in political idealism, unless it happens to benefit them materially, or through pique at failing to benefit materially by the existing order, are very shrewd at finding holes in the patriot's splendid cloak' Liam O'Flaherty (Skerrett)

There is a scepticism about metanarratives in Irish political life at ground level that serves those in power very well. If the demand for housing/ healthcare/ education can be reduced to the granular level of getting help from the TD to move up the housing list/ get a medical card/

/ Get the HE Grant, then the very possibility of class solidarity is rent by fractional personal advantage, the notion that these things must, by their nature, be scarce and that the impression of fair distribution is undercut by the 'everybody knows' ways of getting around it.

What’s so moving about the election results in Brazil & Serbia & global student protests is you think you’re alone wanting things to be different & then suddenly you realise the young generation has got this . They are outmanoeuvring unhinged wealth & power , we have so much to learn from them .

Throughout the entire Fare Hike saga, Government maintained this was a decision by the NTA We now know it was the Dept of Public Expenditure & it was decided 12 months ago Government lied to to the public, the did it repeatedly, & they did it intentionally

I know absolutely nothing about Lula except that i saw someone share a clip on insta of him in celebration kissing a trans woman politician on the cheek and oh my god is that a radical act for a politician in 2026 so lets fucking go

I look forward to hearing about the 10k+ Irish citizens who vote at the consulate in Manchester for the next Irish presidential elction.

Gavan Reilly@gavreilly.com

9,086 Brazilian citizens from across Ireland travelled to the RDS yesterday to vote in the country’s presidential election - an official turnout of 54.3%. Of those, Lula won 80.2%, a good deal higher than the 72.6% he took in the first round a fortnight earlier.

V. Interesting examination of Welsh nationhood in a world systems/ longue durΓ©e frame, in comparison with v different counterexamples of nations w/out states. Fun fact: Welsh speakers were the single most pro-remain set of voters in Britain.

They know his people.

Last week, an English person asked me if we 'have Halloween in Ireland' This is the most offensive thing that anyone has ever said.

I will never not be amused by the notion that this island is populated by 'Britons'.

Russ Jones@russincheshire.bsky.social

Britons should use money we haven't got to buy food the country doesn't grow, store it in homes that don't exist, in spare rooms that got taxed away, so we can survive when reservoirs nobody built run dry because of a climate the govt won't protect. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

If Jim ever becomes Taoiseach, his first year will be a megamix of all the worst bits of Liz Truss, Boris, and Starmer in one chaotically offensive and incompetent form. He won't last beyond that.

This seems to be the Fianna FΓ‘il playbook now. Any opposition to unpopular policies and their response is to undermine and delegitimate those voicing the dissent, whether political parties, workers or social movements. Worrying trend. www.rte.ie/news/courts/...

In one afternoon FF/FG ministers came down like a tonne of bricks on a rape crisis centre when they spent weeks hiding while Musk's Nazi website they use was producing CSAM. Like many of you, I really really hate these bastards.

From β€˜Days of Blue Loyalty’ p. 26. The reason was simply that FG couldn’t find credible candidates in the other four constituencies (the source cited is John Whyte’s book Church and State in Modern Ireland). FG was rescued from possible oblivion by getting into government after 1948 election.

Lovely evening with The Third Man on the big screen in the perfect big suburban cinema, Cottage Road in Far Headingley. One thing in common with Straight Time watched last night - the way the film lifts off halfway through when Stanton or Welles appear.
