I know it’s sorta cheesy but someone posted this from Paris on Reddit and I felt this immediate rush of hope

70 percent of the internet was vulnerable yesterday to very bad security flaws inside a coding language. Turns out, *one volunteer* is mostly responsible for maintaining that code & helping push updates. Yesterday Ondřej Surý saved the internet. So I called him up www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

theatlantic.comThe Man Who Saved the Internet YesterdayOndřej Surý was a relatively anonymous volunteer working on PHP security. Then the internet exploded.

Sad to see the stunning L’hôtel de ville in Limoges in flames. From more peaceful times...

From BBC News: "The average price in Scotland was £2.00.8p at lunchtime on Friday according to the UK Government Fuel Finder. In England it was £2.00.0, Wales was £1.99.7 and Northern Ireland £1.94.2." The formatting of those prices makes my eyes bleed.

I try to keep negative stuff off here, but I read this article earlier and thought the exact same thing. 🚮

So much of the right these days have a massive patriotism problem. This guy: - is a tax exile (left long before this govt) - hates his own country while complaining he doesn’t get big enough subsidies from it - laments the manufacturing hit from a Brexit he supported www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

My favourite is when you find the exact thing you want and it is no longer available as the person no longer works there. Amazing(!)

Here in the UK, 2018 was the hottest summer on record, then 2025 was the hottest summer on record and now 2026 is the hottest summer on record as well as being very dry. Here is a climate/weather summary for the past 12 months showing the multiple heatwaves we have had. #globalwaming #climatechange

I was thinking about perhaps updating my M1 Mac mini after the recent updates, then I looked at the new pricing. Yikes! With education pricing for M6 16GB/512GB = £999 In an ideal world I was looking for M6 24GB/1TB, but that is £1,469. Truly insane pricing. I think I'll keep my M1 for now...

A mapping error from the Treaty of Paris in 1783 led Minnesota to have one of the most beautiful pieces of land in the world at the north end of Lake of the Woods. Every Minnesotan should make the trip.

This is beautiful.

Worth remembering that this government is subsidising a theme park to the tune of £1.3bn. An amount that would go some way to preserving the intellectual and economic footprint of our universities.

According to the parliamentary annual report & accounts for the 2025/26 financial year, the cost of subsidising the bars in the House of Commons alone was around £5.8 million. Meanwhile, to save £3 million less than that, Jodrell Bank is being defunded and shut down. share.google/MRHIvCsCsKoc...

New from me: Until recently, the gap between comfortably-off and just-getting-started could plausibly be crossed in a decade or two of hard work. Growth in asset prices means that’s no longer true: even a lifetime of striving doesn’t offer a realistic prospect of feeling you’ve “made it”.
