Re-introductions are in vogue so here goes: I'm SolFilms everywhere online but y'all can call me Tom I'm a cringe millennial (35) not-too-pretentious cinephile and gunpla builder (also a Forteana and shipwreck dork) I'm "that guy who talks in movie quotes" but it's 70s Hong Kong Godzilla dubs

The closest you get to an "objective" documentary is something like Baraka that's literally just assorted footage of earth and even then, shots are juxtaposed to create associations and suggestions

Sol Films, Ltd. reposted

I majored in communication and minored in cinema. It was drilled into my head over four years that documentaries are persuasive tools with a point of view and cannot be objective just on the grounds that our perspective is whatever the director points their camera at and *chooses* to show us

These people would react to F For Fake like a medieval peasant having a hot dorito

So, just in case anyone didn't know, I have a Patreon where I'm currently translating the revised and expanded edition of The Wings of Rean, Tomino's 2000+ page saga of sex and violence and (eventually) giant bug mecha. I'm almost a quarter of the way done. It's a lot of work. Like, a whole lot.

Signing up for my patreon helps to fund more of this

Specifically I heard it was the Pokemon boom. This is from memory but It makes sense. Japan was suddenly seeing this HUGE explosion in anime on U.S. networks & what use to be in reach for some college students probably became 100X as expensive over night.

Sol Films, Ltd. reposted

People say this was forward thinking, which it was, but anime's own popularity is the reason this didn't last. As I recall, licensing stuff like Eva became so expensive they simply couldn't do it anymore. This really was almost entirely community funded.

Using tech pushed by the people who want to do away with the 14th amendment to talk about the 14th amendment is not the way to go.

Ava DuVernay's 14th, about the 14th Amendment, uses AI to animate old photos that are in the public domain, and the filmmaker wants people to see the documentary for themselves before deciding how they feel about it. tinyurl.com/c6nj6vf7

and EVEN if we managed to square the labour ethics, the environmental impact would be worth considering. As would the funding compensation going to unsavory billionaires. Or ya know, propping up a system used to generate propaganda. each of these should have given her pause.

Ms DuVernay needs to know it's not the CONTENT we're objecting to, but the unethical means by which it was generated. GenAI used on public domain pictures STILL RELIES on stolen, uncompensated, uncredited labor. i'm sure we used to have a word or two for that. "Theft" is the softer word.

My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

My pal Danielle Koenig shared that her father Walter Koenig passed away last night at age 90. A performer whose kindness and warmth shone through the screen. He will be well remembered.

Lula winning is great for the planet, great for Brazil, and great for people who aren't revanchist assholes everywhere in the world, but let's not forget that it's also going to make some of the worst people on Earth extremely sad and mad. We should enjoy that, as a little treat.

Passing Build Back Better would've been extremely beneficial for the 2024 election cycle. It was the half of the Green New Deal that directly benefited the public (The IRA being the corporate subsidies) But Biden used the excuse of the Senate Parliamentarian to kill it. Consistent with his ideology

There's a tendency to assume liberal politicians are clueless and without any ideology. Just weathervanes blown this way and that. But they consistently do unpopular things that are ideologically consistent. Maybe they're pursuing an intelligent strategy consistent with genuinely held transphobia?

The difference between Kawamori and Tomino is the former is more strategic about the use of slaps.
