just saw this--would you or @sofawolf.com know if giant ritualized board/strategy games (Γ la Banks' "The Player of Games" or Hesse's "Glass Bead Game") count for the theme, or does it need to be specifically gaming as the average gamer would understand?
I came to @milehicon.bsky.social with a suitcase full of @tkingfisher.com books to sell.
And Iβll be going home with a suitcase full of books to read.
Anyone sad at missing out on any @tkingfisher.com books who is in the Minneapolis / Saint Paul area... we will be at the Twin Cities Book Festival on November 7th.
We may have signed copies of some of her titles!

We don't so much sell books, we champion great stories. Whether we published them or not, if we loved it, we want to make sure everyone knows about it and why.
We need to do more of that. Just talk about stories we love and why.
It's so much fun sharing our adoration of @tkingfisher.com with her fans. Yeah we sell her books, but we voraciously READ her books too.
She spans so many genres from YA to Fantasy to Horror to Romance. One of the reasons we love selling her books is because there is something for everyone.

We'll be at @milehicon.bsky.social all weekend. Come by and check out her epic fantasy graphic novel Digger, about a very T. Kingfishery wombat engineer lost in a world of magic and destinies (much to her disgust).
The Omnibus copies we had left are gone, but we have the individual volumes.
We also have some Digger pins from the 2013 Omnibus Kickstarter, a few tee shirts, some vinyl decals, and a couple of the limited edition posters.
Plenty of other great books as well!
Weβre open for business at @milehicon.bsky.social and here all weekend. Come and get your @tkingfisher.com fix (and maybe some Furry books for βyour friend who is into that stuffβ π)
Weβve also got post-menopause lesbian shifter romance, werewolf/ghost urban mystery, cozy mystery, the Foxes in Love comic collections, sci-fi, short story collections, etcβ¦
Too much to describe! Come and see!
Happy REDWALL DAY! We're celebrating the harrowing adventures of the smallest critters with 3οΈβ£0οΈβ£% off our TIM'ROUS BEASTIE Anthology! Featuring chilling tales from artists such as @kcg.bsky.social and @abbyhoward.bsky.social!

Here at the hotel for @milehicon.bsky.social and already feeling the difference between SFF cons and Furry cons.
If this were a Furry con, fursuits would have been here since Monday and there would be at least 25 of them in the lobby.
Itβs so quietβ¦
We have a couple days to catch up after returning from @goblfc.org before flying out to @milehicon.bsky.social where we will have a table chock full of @tkingfisher.com goods (from us and other publishers).
This will include a couple super-duper rare leftovers from the Digger Omnibus Kickstarter.
We will also be bringing along a selection of Furry titles from us and other publishers which we feel align well with T. Kingfisher's style.
Also looking forward to talking with any authors or fellow publishers who just want to know more about the Furry genre / culture / community.
As shifter romance has started to become more and more popular, there is a lot more permeability to the genre fiction markets. This is great news as Furry has been doing this stuff for almost three decades.
And we've gotten really good at it.
Another day, another distracted doodle of a cinnamon roll. This time, Alexei from the Dangerous Spirits series finally catching a well-deserved break.

Out of Position continues to occupy an unfair amount of my mental real estate. Ended up spending a whole meeting doodling that one scene in which Dev firmly established himself as the sweetest of cinnamon rolls.

Was playing one of the slots last night here in Reno (of course the Werewolf one), and having done the marketing session earlier in the day it got me thinking...
Machines like this exist to take your money in exchange for an enjoyable experience. That's what creators do too.
Obviously the deck is stacked against you, but a lot of the same things apply to creator business, particularly around retention.
- Reward early and often with small things
- The longer they stay, give them chances at bigger ones
- The more friends they bring, the faster they reach higher levels
This sort of thing is at play a lot in affiliate marketing programs with software companies, so it is not a new idea by any means.
But think of ways that you could track and reward the behavior of people who are your best customers. We're definitely going to add this to our own to-do pile.
Love this thread!
The universal creator's curse is knowing so much about the technical aspects of creating that you devalue the ephemeral nature of your creations.
The life you give your creation is what sells it. The quality of it is what brings people back.
Your art is not about how "good" it is (by which people typically mean skill with a pen). That's a thing but not as big as folks think.
It's about how much life it has. That comes from you- and it's the same no matter your SKILL level. And people respond to that.
Marketing for Furry Creators @goblfc.org
Today at Noon in Shasta I use a lot of dirty words like "customer profile" and "niche" and "marketing funnel" in an attempt to demystify the dark art of marketing for indie creators.
Last night's After Dark Festival will seem tame comparatively. #BLFC
It's been great being back at @goblfc.org! We're vending at booth #306, and we've met so many people who've shared how stories published by @sofawolf.com have impacted their lives.
Many hugs were had. Much heart was shared.
Stories matter. It's why we do this. β€οΈ

This article is largely about the Fiber Arts community and a site called Ravelry, but I think there is a lot of interest there to Furry creators.

The takeaway is that the days of simply being online is no longer enough to make a creative career possible. It is now a crowded market all using the same playbook.
This is a big part of what I'll be covering in my Marketing for Furry Creators panel on Wednesday at BLFC (and afterwards online).
It doesn't mean you need a marketing department OR that you need to spend all your time building an audience rather than creating.
But if you DO want to try to monetize your creative skills in any meaningful way you can no longer rely on your creations to sell themselves.
This article is largely about the Fiber Arts community and a site called Ravelry, but I think there is a lot of interest there to Furry creators.

"The thing that worries me is that we're being pushed toward self-sufficiency at exactly the same time that it seems to be getting harder to build a sustainable independent career that isnβt dictated by the whims of tech companies and social media algorithms."
"We talk a lot about why people tend to gravitate towards the same knitting patterns, the same books, the same creators... itβs a natural consequence of there just being so many choices that we need something to help us decide, so we tend to focus on what is popular to narrow down our options."
I donβt think this is universally the case. There is a lot of promoting of Furry-made media within the community.
There can definitely be more and we need to figure out ways to reach the community more effectively.
People talk about what they know about.
The furry community is really bad about promoting furry media that's actually made BY FURRIES and will instead exclusively promote childrens media that happens to have anthro characters
There's furry books, comics, there used to be conlang projects
Support your fellow artist if you want furry art
Itβs something we are thinking a lot about, and not just for products we are directly involved with.
The answer will come from all of us, but hopefully we can help facilitate and empower it.
I also feel like, while I get the "By Furries" part, there is room for welcoming and promoting creators (especially those from disadvantaged / marginalized communities) who are willing to embrace and respect the Furry community.
Long way of saying we can embrace those who embrace us, too.
Our contract terms have ALWAYS been strictly pro-creator, with limited exclusivity terms, very specific usage rights, and all other rights being retained by the creator.
Are there instances where we wish we had asked for more? Definitely!
But we can always go back to the creators and ask for more.
We're always happy to adjust contract terms until everyone is satisfied with the language.
Creators made us what we are and we can't imagine doing things any other way.
In light of some magazines pulling scummy things on creators lately, Iβm doing a little thread on short story rights. I don't want anybody getting taken advantage of.
Also, if you're new, this stuff can be confusing!
