the difference in the installation experience of windows xp vs the installation experience of windows 11 is insane. it makes it so incredibly transparent how much they do not care about windows anymore because it isn't the product anymore.

Today in Tech History@techhistory.bsky.social

25 years ago today, Windows XP was released.

luajit compiled to wasm, where it uses a host function to invoke WebAssembly.instantiate and store that into a table, is quite fast ๐Ÿ‘€

we made all the context menus lazy load because people don't typically use them and it made the main bundle smaller. this was done before vibecoding too... always interesting to see a "feature" through the eyes of the end user.

just right-clicked a server on Discord and watched the dropdown menu load for like a good 10 seconds why does it do that. why CAN it even do that. it literally should not be possible for that to happen why is modern software this way

i always hit this thing where clippy always wants to rewrite code like this to have the `if let Err(e) = forget(app, key).await` be part of the else condition. i feel like that decreases legibility in this case though?

me: yeah i'll open the door then dm: ok you have entered the bone passage me: the what? dm: that ends your turn me: ???

jpegxl is such a funny format, this is a 79 byte file. the image you see now is a png conversion since bluesky doesn't support it but the original is at gc.gy/smoke.jxl

this was inspired by jxl-art.lucaversari.it though I am using a few features that does not support in this image (notably: stacking RCTs to copy chroma data into the alpha channel)

also interesting... the modular predictor part of jxl-rs is small and simple enough that you can just rewrite it in js and use it to seed dynamically sized backgrounds on webpages

kpn is the undisputed champion of sending me modems i do not need and did not ask for i have 3 of these stupid things now

my partner, across the room: you know, they actually advise against cleaning the rollers with a q-tip while they spin because it could get caught in the mechanism me, cleaning my partner's camera with a q-tip while the rollers spin, sucking all the fuzz into the mechanism: oh huh, good to know

all this time and discussion about how to fund open source meanwhile the real strategy appears to just be loudly being a nazi i am so tired

if anyone who follows me is into html/css animation performance stuff, i have a nerd snipe for u: snek.dev several people have told me it runs slow on their phones

i really wish companies had a little button for you to view the pre-ai version of their website so you can actually tell what the fuck it is they do

bit of an update, it's been a few months now since I parted ways with Deno, and I'm starting to actively look for jobs again! I'm pretty good with big systems, compilers, and embedded. especially if rust or elixir are involved :)

i've had a UPS for years and it's saved me from a real power outage exactly once, but it's saved me from me fucking with the breaker switches probably 10-15 times.

it must really suck to make those lcd displays used in all the embedded diy projects like they can all do 120hz and vsync and region updates and every single bit of example code is like the most fucked up laggy screen tear mess

the more i use truenas scale the more i become convinced it is made by people who do not actually store any data on truenas scale

today's fun fact: an unmodified pico 2w can send and receive esp-now frames if you send enough weird ioctls to the the wifi chip

not really relevant to anything but this reminded me that one of the first pieces of code I ever wrote was a little visual studio project that rendered a virtual cursor for each mouse plugged into my dad's laptop

this is imo one of those latent omega projects of computing that changes everything forever completely & that we cannot imagine the time before on. multiplayer/coop! blinry.org/multi-seat-w... ambient screens/workspaces about that we can readily come join in on. go @blinry.org go! /cc @genmon.fyi

the code changes within firefox are actually fairly minimal, the most annoying part was binding openscreen's quic stuff to neqo instead of quiche as they didn't properly abstract it.

OH: "networking engineers think LANs are real in the same way that cis people think gender is real"

nice thing about running your own git forge is that the actions runner starts with no delay and has better uptime

I want security but qubesos is a huge pain. all I really need is for every project I check out to implicitly be given its own container/microvm. does good tooling for this exist? automatically switching into the correct context when my shell cwd enters a project folder or something?

and automatically creating a new one( or having a single repeatable command to init one) when I clone a repo...

me: *laying on the floor under the dining table, eating eggs* am I normal? my partner: -.-

i think my all-time most wanted feature for git would be the ability to have a set of patches in a repo that are automatically applied on top of a submodule checkout

had to add some logic to doom to scale *down* the rendered output due to how tiny this display is

migrating from paper to eink, synced from ics calendar data and using temporal js for the logic and formatting :3
