Can food price caps help respond to rising living costs? #SSDMoney This briefing from academics @oxmartinschool.bsky.social @smithschool.ox.ac.uk finds that they are 'economically inefficient':
New research co-authored by Gireesh Shrimali finds that subsidising the early retirement of coal plants could cost substantially less than buying them out outright, while helping accelerate the transition away from coal. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
The researchers also find that using revenue linked to avoided CO₂ emissions could make early retirement financially viable at relatively modest carbon prices. Across every scenario modelled, the required carbon price was below $20 per tonne. @gdp-center.bsky.social www.bu.edu/gdp/2026/09/...

BIG NEWS: Up to 75% of global energy demand could be electrified by 2050 with technologies we already have. Progress is slow and the barriers are mostly political and institutional. Today we launch the Oxford Martin Electrification Accelerator to change that. oxfordmartin.ox.ac.uk/electrification

Could changes to product ranges impact health and the environment? According to new research published in Nature Food, small changes could make a big difference.
The study finds that leading UK food and drink manufacturers could significantly improve the overall nutrition and sustainability of their portfolios by changing just 10% or less of their existing product lines.\
Researchers analysed products sold by 44 major manufacturers and identified opportunities for manufacturers to improve their portfolios without fundamentally changing what they sell. @oxmartinschool.bsky.social
New working paper by #OxfordSmithSchool & @inetoxford.bsky.social finds that banks’ risk models assign lower credit risk to higher-emitting companies, raising questions about whether transition risks are fully reflected in these assessments. www.smithschool.ox.ac.uk/news/low-emi...
As a result, the banks assess these companies as being less risky than those with low emissions, which could lead to higher borrowing costs for clean energy companies. www.smithschool.ox.ac.uk/sites/defaul...

Organic free-range eggs are often assumed to be the more sustainable choice 🥚 However, a new study finds that producing all UK eggs organically and free-range could lead to higher greenhouse gas emissions, greater land use, and increased pressure on nature 👇 bit.ly/4fI1fzG @smithschool.ox.ac.uk

If that's really true, the conclusion shouldn't be to keep more chickens in cages, but to consume fewer eggs.
