I realized something today: gacha is like the society in Ursula K. LeGuin's "The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas." You've got a game with constant new content, given away totally for free--but the whole thing depends upon completely destroying a small group of vulnerable individuals.

It always comes back to this for me; if AI was so good, such a disclosure would be a selling point. If AI was everything these slop jockeys said it was, they should be proud to let people know their game was AI made. But the proof is in the pudding, and they can't stand that people don't want it.

I can't believe he's still at it, it's been days

This is crazy--this goes beyond copyright infringement and into the realm of actionable trademark violations under the Lanham Act. I sincerely hope Valve's attorneys are advising them to do something about this...

How do you even survive as an indie in the current landscape? This is insane.

“Tony [Gilroy] finally turned to me, and he said, ‘Hey, you just got to stop pitching plot. Plot is bullshit. Plot is what happens when you get the behavior right. Pitch me a line of dialogue, pitch me atmosphere, pitch me something visual. Stop pitching stuff that happens.’” 1/2

Information: This is for 720 games released (see start of thread). So 8.6% hit 100 reviews, which might mean they are doing OK, depending on budget. And 1.4% hit 1000 reviews. Those games are probably successful (or will be in the long term) but it all depends on team size, time taken etc.

I was asked for the number of games with 50+ reviews / 100+ reviews / 1,000+ reviews. Here are last week releases for those:

This is a good summary. The legal reasons are enough all on their own, tbh--not actually owning a copyright in your own game art is a bad situation to be in.

Blue Bottle Games, as a policy, does not use generative AI. It's something we've discussed as a team, weighing the pros and cons, and ultimately, we decided it was not for us. Recently, while chatting with a colleague, she mentioned it was useful hearing our reasoning. So: Sharing time! 1/12

With regards to that last repost, reviews can mean a lot to smaller developers, so I'm gonna put out a little call to action. Everyone following me? DO THIS NOW! I'm asking for replies so more folks pick this up, and continue it. Please take this graphic and ask your followers to do the same!

She's not wrong. It's kind of mind-blowing to me that companies like Sony have voluntarily chosen to make this the case.

piracy is the only extant form of media preservation that exists in games right now, you might find it morally reprehensible but there is literally no other institution that will keep games alive in 25, 50 years' time

I don't want to pretend this *isn't* shocking or ghastly but, like, when digital media experts are expressing concern generally about the data a game like Pokemon Go is collecting from day one, this is precisely the kind of end game they are thinking about.

Schera Wyss 💀 SLUG HUMAN@scherawyss.bsky.social

This might be one of the most insane scandals in game history When Pokemon Go players scan PokeStops, theyve been unknowingly building a detailed visual model of the world which is being sold to a military contractor to build a no-GPS positioning for the new generation of unmanned killing machines

Lol, wowww. The disrespect! I wonder if this guy's strategy is to goad developers into responding with a well-earned "fuck off," only to claim that they accepted the terms of the offer by replying to the email?
