If you're writing about games and you would like a review key for Horses of Hoofprint Bay, please send me an email or DM because I am not wasting anyone's time with cold outreach to uninterested people 😇💖 (I did just send keys to some folks who have written about horse game stuff before)

Many Magic: The Gathering cards incidentally abandon lands in exile ("exile cards from the top of your library until you exile a nonland card") but no cards seem to specifically care about lands you own in exile. Feels like fertile design space.

Explaining a joke doesn't, typically, make a joke funnier. The trick is to ensure that the explaination is a new, more palatable, joke. This allows those who understand the first joke to laugh at those who didn't while, simultaneously, allowing the remaining audience to have something to laugh at.

They say a broken clock is right twice a day but, sometimes, we are talking about a weird 37 hour clock running backwards at varying speeds and so it's extra surprising when it is right but still just a statistical anomaly so, while notable, not a sign of anything in particular.

@latenightseth.bsky.social My name is Mark Rosewater. I’m the Head Designer for Magic: The Gathering. I hear Seth is learning to play Magic with his son. If he ever wants some help learning how to play, I’d be glad to lend a hand. I’m a big fan of the show. #WotCStaff

Really enjoying Fields of Mistria. While I've played a number of Animals Crossing and Harvest Moon-likes... I am still feeling like "Guy who as only ever played Stardew Valley" here... not complaining but it really does give "Stardew Valley vibes". Way more than Fae Farm.

Pitch for Marvel Comics (which I don't read regularly enough to know if they've done this before). You know that Marvel's Midnight Suns game? Make a comic of just the "hanging out" bits... every issue starts with everyone returning from a mission and ends with everyone heading out again.

Some MTG cards might seem confusing but, just remember the old adage: Reading the latest Oracle Text of a Card, along with any relevant rules in the Magic: The Gathering Comprehensive Rules and rulings in Gatherer for every card in play, explains the Card. (This post inspired by rule 206.3a)

Ran out of people in real life to gush at so: I'm very excited a library branch is opening near me. I grew up near a library and my 1st apartment was near one… but it's been ~15 years since I've been able to walk to the library. Bookmobile or ordering to the community centre's fine but not the same.

I am planning on trying the "write a novel in November" thing again this year. Since I've never gotten past the first few thousand words I am going to take a very laid back "do what I can" approach rather than picking one of the various "rule sets" that exist. [1/5]

I think the idea here is that creative writing is, in a way, an advanced form of the skills required for reading. Plotting uses the same mental muscles as following a plot, imagining what happens next in a novel you are reading or writing are a similar way of thinking... and so on. [4/5]

So, is that real/true? If so, how much do writers need to read? Can an aspiring writer start by building up their "reading muscles" or do I need to enjoy reading more than average to have a hope of becoming a writer? [5/5]

As part of my preparation, I would like to share "writing advice I've picked up over the years". Not "advice I am sharing" so much as "air out thoughts for public discussion and critique". My first #WritingTips post is the one I assume is the least controversial: "Writers Read"... [2/5]

In Stephen King's "On Writing" he spends quite a bit of time selling this idea from a number of angles but the part that stuck with me is that if you haven't figured out how to make time for reading in your life, you probably don't enjoy reading enough to write. [3/5]

This piece was concepted over a year before I painted it. Originally I envisioned the original Kiki-Jiki, but realized that didn't make a lot of mechanical sense as Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker can't copy himself. "Reflection" sells it much better imo.

Overheard a new Commander player mentioning that he's won a few times but still loses most of the time. I mentioned the folowiing to him and then realized it's probabaly bears repeating: Commander is a four player game, if you a losing 3/4 of the time, that means you are in a balanced pod.

On the understanding that we have many real details to work out, I feel we should require the USA to officially recognize the correct names of Lake Ontario and The Gulf of Mexico again, and an apology from POTUS acknowledging that these "changes" were disrespectful, before we return to the table.

Had a Nintendo fan in my life mention they hadn't played any Metroid games and so didn't play Dread. My kid was saying that the latest Nintendo Direct didn't have anything too exciting and I was like "What about new Metroid?" and he was like, "Meh, not many people like Metroid".

This whole thing is alarming to me... like... I feel like Metroid, as a franchise and a handful of really excellent games, should be way bigger of a deal to Nintendo fans and retro gamers. This is the game* that inspired a highly popular genre! *(The original Castlevania was not a Metroidvania.)

If you have a Switch and Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription... or have another way of playing GBA games... I highly recommend you play Metroid: Zero Mission. It's a faithful built-from-the-ground-up and expanded GBA remake of the NES original. Just give it a try.
