As Storm #Boelo tracks across/close to N/NW Scotland on Saturday night, its central pressure is likely to be 946-949 hPa. The current UK October low MSLP record is 947.9 hPa (Storm Amy 2025). There's a chance we could beat this... just one week after near-record high MSLP! bsky.app/profile/danh...

1040.4 hPa at Tulloch Bridge on Saturday morning makes this the strongest high pressure over the UK in October since 2018 — and in Scotland since 2016. Several sites with ~30 years data have set new October MSLP records in S'ern Scotland, N'ern England & Northern Ireland. @alexdeakin.bsky.social

Austen is looking remarkably like a subtropical storm this morning, with an eye-like feature moving up the English Channel.

METOP-B, 0928 UTC Overpass: WESTERN EUROPE to NORTH AFRICA. Storm Austen's wider effect. Looks that way from a potential vorticity cross section too – warm core/cyclonic PV maximum in lower-mid troposphere

🎉 20 years of TIGGE. TIGGE has enabled researchers worldwide to compare ensemble forecasts, improve weather prediction, and better understand forecast uncertainty. Proud that ECMWF has played a key role as one of the archive hosts for this international collaboration. www.ecmwf.int/en/about/med...

Will Storm Boelo break the UK's record lowest October sea-level pressure, set only last year during Storm Amy (947.9 hPa)?

2025 was also a year in which natural variability of the Antarctic polar vortex helped lessen losses, thus adding to the forced ozone recovery trend: the vortex was weaker and warmer than normal, seen here through the negative SAM.

World Meteorological Organization@wmo-global.bsky.social

The Antarctic ozone hole in 2025 was one of the smallest in decades. 🌎 Yet UV exposure remains a concern: since the mid-1990s, it has increased by up to 20% in parts of Europe. ☀️ Effective UV protection remains essential. Learn more: https://bit.ly/WMOOzoneUVBulletin2026pr

The opposite is true this year bsky.app/profile/cope...

Copernicus ECMWF@copernicusecmwf.bsky.social

The 2026 Antarctic ozone hole is showing remarkable behaviour: it is one of the largest on record and still very large for the time of year, when the ozone hole area typically starts to decrease, but so far it has not been the deepest. Latest developments: atmosphere.copernicus.eu/monitoring-o...

The new gas field isn’t going to bring down your bills. Gas is bought & sold globally, so the reality is, fossil fuels controlled by dictators have Britain in a chokehold til we fully embrace gas-free driving & heating and cut the link between electricity and gas. (🧵 1/2)

The warming will continue until we reach net zero emissions. At which point, we will need to live with whatever climate we’ve ended up in. The sooner we reach net zero, the less extreme that climate will be, and the easier and less costly it will be to adapt to it.

One of those loops that's nearly impossible to watch to the end without saying "phwoar" out loud

Evolution of Super Typhoon #Champi over the last 24 hours. Watch until the end to see the rapid deepening over the past 6 hours following what was likely ERC.

1039 hPa. Overnight low of 1.6°C rising to a maximum around 12°C. An absolutely glorious autumn day in northeast Fife.

And for anyone thinking that seems like an unusually high pressure for the time of year, you’d be correct! Thanks for the stats @danholley.bsky.social bsky.app/profile/danh...

Growth is important but so is ensuring we don’t further deviate from the climate in which all growth ever has happened

Analysed as 931 hPa on 12Z ASXX, with a fall in central pressure of 49 hPa in 24 hours, this exceptionally deep low near Iceland more than satisfies explosive cyclogenesis 🌀 Potentially a record deep low for October in Iceland with 935 hPa observed on land... 📉 bsky.app/profile/meto...

A rapidly deepening area of low pressure has undergone explosive cyclogenesis today 🌀 This is pulling warmer air northwards, but also bringing stormy conditions across the far northwest 👇

Would a Godzilla La Niña (if there is such a thing) get the same level of coverage? La Niña causes climatic extremes around the world. Just because it represents a local cooling and a dip in global mean temperatures doesn't mean it isn't impactful. Or are the impacts of El Niño quantifiably worse?

Surprised I haven't seen any headlines about the Extreme To The Max Super Godzilla El Niño slowing down the rotation rate of Earth and thus making the days a bit longer (conservation of angular momentum)

A few years ago in the exam for my dynamics class, a student wrote "Is there an El Niño? Because this day has just been going on for ages!". Proud lecturer moment.

Some satisfying isolated Altocumulus lenticularis looking towards Angus and the Cairngorms from St Andrews earlier, with a lower layer of broken Cumulus and higher Cirriform formations.

An exceptionally deep extratropical cyclone for the time of year just west of Ireland. 953 hPa on the 12 UTC Met Office analysis. Helping drive strong warm advection to its east which has brought exceptionally high temperatures to parts of the UK yesterday and overnight ahead of the cold front.

I’ve updated the long-running (starts 1866) CRU Southern Oscillation Index (SOI). This lets us compare the currently developing El Niño with earlier events including 1877-78. 2026 has developed very quickly, similar to the 1997-98 one. Thick line is 3-month running mean, with y-axis reversed.

#Gibraltar - 19/09 - after a mostly cloudy and breezy start, with any showers passing to our South in the Strait and over Morocco, we now have plenty of sunshine with a detached Lenticular-type Levanter forming as the Easterly strengthened - at 12:30pm, the temp is 24C in a moderate or fresh wind.
